Everton signing this 59-cap South American could turn out to be a masterstroke by Silva

Man United’s Marcos Rojo could be a brilliant addition for Everton

Everton are in urgent need of strengthening their defensive unit. An ageing backline, including the likes of Phil Jagielka and Leighton Baines, has seen Ashley Williams leave, as he joined Stoke on a season-long loan.

And despite the arrival of Lucas Digne, defensive reinforcements are needed. A lot of speculation has been going on, but one name seems to stand out more than others – Manchester United’s Marcos Rojo. According to Express, Rojo is an Everton target. So now, the question remains – is he the right man for the Toffees?

The main problem for Everton is that Rojo’s wage demands could prove to be a financial stumbling block during negotiations. But if they are able to convince him to take a pay cut, they should not hesitate to conclude a deal.

With proven experience in the Premier League, fire in his belly and a strong technical ability when stepping out of defence with the ball, the Argentine looks like a good option. In his best spells under Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho, he has looked amazing, but he just hasn’t been able to produce often enough.

Rojo is certainly not without his flaws, as his reckless attitude and tendency to fly into tackles have earned him plenty of unwanted criticism during his time at Old Trafford. He hasn’t been able to shine because of a series of injuries as well, which have stopped his progress. However, should he manage to stay fit and not get silly yellow cards, he could be a valuable addition to the side.

Having said that, the South American has many great qualities. It shouldn’t be underestimated that he is left-footed, which will bring some more balance to the Everton squad. He’s comfortable on the ball too, which is essential for centre-backs in modern football.

Everton have been looking extremely susceptible to counter-attacks recently and a number of sides could exploit that with sheer pace through the centre. Rojo, unlike Jagielka and Michael Keane, is rather quick. Thus, he can help Everton in such situations and make the team more stable.

The 28-year-old has 59 caps for Argentina to his name and has won the FA Cup, League Cup, Europa League and Community Shield with United. His experience can prove to be vital for the Toffee should they manage to sign him.
