Why Derby County should snap up free agent Diego Poyet

Nigerian International Efe Ambrose completed his move to Derby County on a short-term deal until the end of the season. The 30-year-old was without a club after triggering a clause in his contract to leave Scottish Premiership side Hibernian in January.

Derby County boss Frank Lampard identified a lack of depth in his defensive options and has snapped up Efe Ambrose on a free transfer. Lampard has impressed in his first managerial spell with Derby and has led his side to within touching distance of the playoffs this season.

After strengthening his defence, Lampard must now shift his focus to the midfield which lacks some real bite and purpose. The likes of Tom Huddlestone and George Evans are defensive-minded players, known for their passing abilities and tackling traits.

Andy King is expected to bring balance to the team but the Rams need more than just him to tackle the challenging second half of the season.

With Derby eyeing promotion, Lampard would be wise to snap up free agent Diego Poyet on a short-term deal.

A product of the Charlton Athletic youth system, Diego Poyet’s once-promising career has stalled in recent years. He signed for Cypriot club Pafos in 2017 but left after just a season. The 23-year-old is currently without a club and while his career has stagnated, he is just 23 and has a lot of time to put things in the right place.

Lampard could certainly help the talented Diego Poyet in getting his career back on track. In return, the 23-year-old Uruguayan would bring some bite to the Derby midfield and increase competition within the squad. He could be used in rotation with the likes of Huddlestone and Evans in the midfield as games come thick and fast.

Frank Lampard

Poyet is quick with the ball at his feet. He has a great touch and great passing to go with it. But he also has very good positional sense and Lampard will clearly help him to time his late runs. There’s plenty of talent in the Uruguayan, and it is a shame that he never realised his true potential in England.

That said, Derby must beef up their squad by offering Poyet a short-term deal until the end of the season.
