Manchester City opinion: Cityzens in for Giovani Lo Celso – Good move?

According to a report in Manchester Evening News (MEN), Premier League champions Manchester City are looking at the situation of Giovani Lo Celso as the midfielder is primed to leave Real Betis during this summer transfer window.

As per the report, manager Pep Guardiola will assess the 23-year-old’s performances over the course of the Copa America for Argentina before making any decision over a potential transfer. Tottenham and Atletico Madrid are also interested in the player.

It is believed that Spurs had a bid of €60m rejected by the Spanish, as they feel more money can be recouped from either of City or Atleti. (h/t MEN)

Lo Celso arrived at Betis last summer itself, on loan from PSG, a club where he struggled to find his feet. The Spanish side are eager to make his stay permanent, however, they are also looking to cash in, if the right offer is made. (h/t MEN)

Here’s why City should make the right offer and swoop in for the Argentine international:

David Silva’s long-term replacement

As per a report in Sun, Manchester City’s long-serving attacking midfield player David Silva, who is now 33 years old, has got a fantastic offer from a Qatari club.

Now, having played for almost a decade at the Etihad and in the twilight of his career, the former Spain international may just accept that offer and leave England.

That would leave a massive gap in one of the attacking midfield positions in the team. While Phil Foden has played there in some of the games replacing Silva, it is clear that the youngster still has to learn a lot before nailing that spot down.

Hence, it would make sense for the club to sign Giovani Lo Celso from Real Betis this summer. The 23-year-old is a central midfielder, who can play the box-to-box role.

With nine goals and five assists in 32 La Liga appearances, the Argentina star has shown that he is a very ambitious midfielder, who doesn’t shy away from making runs in the box.

Conclusion

Therefore, City would really benefit from having Lo Celso in their squad, as a proper replacement for David Silva. They must have to offer more than what Spurs did in order to get the deal done though.
