Chelsea Transfers: £15million Serie A Star Is An Ideal Replacement For Frank Lampard

Inter Milan midfielder Fredy Guarin, has been linked with a move to the English capital with Chelsea seeking his services. According to the Express, Chelsea have enquired about the midfielder and negotiations over a £15million deal is believed to be at an advanced stage. Should they sign him?

To replace Frank Lampard

Frank Lampard has worked his way up from being a new signing to arguably Chelsea’s best ever player. Although he can still have a say in how games turn out, he can motivate his side to victory, while his free kicks and shots from distance remain as lethal as ever. However, he is now 35 years old, and will be 36 by the start of next season, and he will not always be able to play, and although Chelsea have seemingly the largest collection of talented attacking midfielders in Europe, none of their current ensemble is quite like Lamps, though Guarin is almost a carbon copy of the England international. This means that Mourinho will not need to change his game plan, as he will just be able to make a like for like replacement, saving time and results. Chelsea fans may not like to admit it, but Guarin is younger and better than the former West Ham man and should fit in seamlessly.

To add depth in the CAM role

Chelsea currently have Frank Lampard, Willian and Juan Mata to take the central attacking midfield role, and all are so different and individualistic that it gives Chelsea so many options in attack when starting a game. Lampard is a more textbook British midfielder who tries to get the job done even if it isn’t pretty, while working hard but lacking in technical ability. Willian is a box of tricks. Full of skill, flair and can bamboozle defenders with outrageous trickery while also having technical skills in abundance, though he is not always the hardest worker.

Juan Mata meanwhile is the team player, the type that every manager wishes for. He is fast, skillful, has an eye for goal and is a wonderful passer, though does not always get the job done and rarely covers his defensive duties. Guarin however is a mixture of them all, hardworking, skillful, technical and can drop back to a deep-lying role, and it is a player of his type who every team wants. Chelsea may have too many midfielders, though not any as versatile as the Colombian International.

To signal their intent

Chelsea signing Fredy Guarin would show the rest of the Premier League that in the second half of the season, they mean business. Despite saying several times that he doesn’t want to leave Inter, Chelsea are still interested and the competition may be too tough for Jose Mourinho’s side. However, if they could pip the others, it would show the world that Chelsea are still a team to compete with in the transfer market.
