Chelsea FC: Why Selling Their £50m Star Is A Bad Idea

With Chelsea deemed to miss out on Falcao, whose move to Monaco looks more than a possibility now, they are left with Man City target Cavani and Man United target Lewandowski as the only two big money signings to look forward to in the summer window.

But such a big money move would also mean that they have to offload their strike force which would then consist of Lukaku, Torres, Ba and Cavani. Now it will be a harebrained decision if they let go their talented youngster Lukaku who deserves all the time in the world to blossom into the perfect “Didier Drogba” replacement for which he was roped in the first place.

It leaves either Torres or Ba the only choice to offload. While it has been a common cry from Chelsea fans all over the world to get rid of the Spanish world cup winner, we take a look at three possible reasons as to why that may be just a bad move at this juncture.

Torres has had his best campaign in three seasons this term and if you include the Golden Boot trophy in the FIFA European Championship for Spain, being named in the team of the competition for the Europa League and take into account the fact he’s scored 21 goals this season, you cant help but ask: Is Fernando Torres getting back to being El Nino?

Finally settling down

When a player is brought in from another club for a sum as astonishing as £50m, he is expected to fire right away. But that may not be case every time and with Torres that certainly has not been the situation. His first two seasons for Chelsea have been disappointing to say the least as he constantly led them down in the biggest of games. But finally this season he has seemed to find back his old form under Rafa Benitez, the man who brought him to Liverpool. He has netted 23 times this season, the most important being the opening goal at the Europa league final. Thus he must be given another season at least to rise to his full potential and then a decision can be taken.

He is nowhere near to his full potential, but the signs may have finally arrived.

Managerial instability

Torres has been unfortunate in the sense that Chelsea have not always been consistent with the treatment of their managers. Roman’s hire and fire policy is bound to have a negative impact on the players and Torres has been sort of a victim. But under Rafa he has realised his true potential for the first time with the London outfit and with Mourinho to take over next season, it cannot get worse for the Spaniard as he himself has expressed his desire to work under the Portuguese manager.

The chance to work with Mourinho is something every player wants to do at least once in their lives.

“He has been at the club before, some of the players have worked with him and know what kind of manager he is. Obviously we are waiting for the news about the new manager.

“Mourinho is one of the best managers in the world and Chelsea are one of the best teams. Normally, everyone is linking Mourinho with Chelsea but we will see what happens. I think we have to be ready for him to come. I am really looking forward to next season, it’s going to be very exciting.”

Diminished value

It is no secret that if Chelsea have to sell Torres right now his transfer fee would not be anywhere near the £50m mark, leaving the Blues with a minimum £20m loss and although Roman may not mind that, it could incur a further with the predicted 18.7% of Chelsea’s shirt sales belong to Torres .

It is for the best that the Blues would want to provide him with one final opportunity and abstain from making a business that would not be of any good for the club. While he may be inconsistent, his presence has certainly brought in success to the club.
