Burnley Opinion: Why Mbwana Samatta would be a smart buy for Burnley?

According to a report from The Sun, Burnley are one of the host of Premier League clubs interested in signing Genk striker Mbwana Samatta.

The Tanzania international, 26, netted 23 goals to help Genk win the title last season. In fact, the striker made 51 appearances across all competitions this season and scored a remarkable 32 goals in return. He may be under contract at Genk until 2021 but a £12m fee could convince the Belgium outfit to let him go.

Samatta wants to move to the Premier League after this year’s African Cup of Nations with Tanzania and Burnley must do everything to their powers to beat their Premier League rivals to his signature.

The Clarets beat the drop quite comfortably this past season after some nervy moments but they need to look for reinforcements in all areas of the pitch. Sean Dyche’s side struggled for goals once again in the Premier League, managing just 45 goals last season.

Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood were heavily relied upon for goals and the duo delivered. Matej Vydra arrived at the Turf Moor following a fantastic season with Derby County last summer, but managed only one goal throughout the 2018/19. Apart from Barnes and Wood, the rest of the side’s inability to contribute was the club’s biggest downfall.

Having scored a truckload of goals at Genk, Mbwana Samatta could be an inspired addition to the Burnley ranks. Essentially a centre-forward by trade, Samatta is a versatile, pacey and dynamic footballer who can add a lot of value to Dyche’s side.

Noted for his ability to find the back of the net, speed and off the ball movement, the Tanzanian is not only a tireless worker but he is also adept at linking up play.

The 26-year-old is a deadly finisher in front of goal and can terrorise defences with his burst of acceleration and sudden changes in movement.

On paper at least, Samatta could be a potentially game-changing addition for a team looking to avoid another relegation dogfight. Burnley need a reliable goalscorer to take the pressure off Barnes and Wood, and the Tanzanian would be the right fit at Turf Moor.

Verdict

Samatta appears to be hitting the peak of his career following a fantastic season in front of goal and he deserves his shot in a top league.

At £12m, he would represent a significant piece of business for the Clarets, who are yet to kickstart their summer transfer business.
