Why Brentford should go back in the market for Lyle Taylor

According to a previous report from London News Online, Brentford were interested in completing a move for Charlton Athletic striker Lyle Taylor.

However, the Bees were rebuffed in their pursuit of Taylor by the newly-promoted Championship side on several occasions, with the Addicks turning down as many as four bids for the striker’s services throughout the summer window. (h/t London News Online)

Having fired Charlton to promotion with a tally of 25 goals in 45 appearances across all competitions in the previous campaign, the 29-year-old’s stocks were soaring sky-high during the summer but the Addicks’ determination to hold on to him forced the striker to stay at The Valley.

Fast forwarding the sequence of events to mid-October, Charlton’s decision to retain the services of Lyle Taylor has paid off handsomely. The 29-year-old has found the net on five occasions in six appearances in the Championship.

Taylor delivered back-to-back man-of-the-match performances to propel the Addicks to victories Blackburn Rovers and Stoke City and went on to score against Barnsley, Nottingham Forest and Reading, as Charlton took the Championship by storm.

Things haven’t really been the same for Lee Bowyer’s side since the knee injury to the in-form 29-year-old hitman. With Taylor’s contract at The Valley set to expire next summer, it wouldn’t be surprising to see a host of Championship clubs weighing up a cut-price deal for the Greenwich-born star in January.

With that in mind, Brentford should look to go back in the market for Lyle Taylor when the transfer window reopens in January.

Currently languishing 17th in the standings, the Bees have endured a poor start to their campaign in the Championship this term and the acquisition of a powerful striker like Taylor could go a long way towards helping them climb up the table.

Brentford have only managed to find the net 9 times in 11 league games, which is the second-worst scoring record in the entire division. The lack of firepower up top has been quite ridiculous, considering that 7 out of those 9 goals have been scored by Ollie Watkins.

Said Benrahma and Sergi Canos have done pretty well in wide attacking roles but the lack of a genuine point in the attack has led to a disparity between the midfielders and those operating in advanced roles further up the pitch.

Suffice to say, someone like Lyle Taylor, who has been in terrific form for Charlton since the start of the previous campaign, would prove to be an inspired addition to the Bees’ ranks, with summer recruits Niko Karelis and Joel Valencia failing to make a positive impact.

With his towering 6ft 2in frame and obvious pedigree in the air, the 29-year-old would undoubtedly add that much-needed physical edge to Brentford’s forward line. His imminent availability on a cut-price deal makes it an absolute no-brainer for the Bees to make a renewed attempt to sign him.

That said, Brentford going back in the market for Lyle Taylor could go a long way towards solving their goalscoring woes.
