Brentford might be left to regret the departure of Marcus Forss on loan

As confirmed via Brentford’s official website, Brentford youngster Marcus Forss has joined League One outfit AFC Wimbledon on a season-long loan deal until the end of the 2019-20 campaign. 

The same source suggests that the highly-rated 20-year-old centre-forward put pen to paper on a new four-year deal at Griffin Park before heading out on loan to Wimbledon for the remainder of the ongoing campaign. 

A youth product of West Brom, Forss never made a single competitive appearance for his boyhood club and joined Brentford in the summer of 2017, initially linking up with the B team at Griffin Park. 

The Finnish starlet was a raging success for the Bees’ ‘B’ team in the 2017-18 season and his impressive tally of 21 goals earned him the Mary Halder B Team Player of the Year Award at the end of the campaign. 

As well as that, the youngster was rewarded with a new contract for his rapid development and promoted to the first-team squad prior to the start of the 2018-19 season.

Forss enjoyed a goalscoring professional debut for Brentford in an EFL Cup tie at Southend United last August before making his bow in the Championship against Blackburn Rovers later in the same month.

A dreadful back injury ruled the 20-year-old out of action for five months until the beginning of 2019 but he returned strongly in the second half of the previous campaign and scored his first goal of the Championship, netting the winner in Brentford’s victory over Preston North End on the final day of the season. 

Forss played a couple of cameos off the bench in the fixtures against Birmingham City and Hull City in the Championship and bagged his first goal of the season against Cambridge United in the EFL Cup before the Bees decided to send him out on loan to Wimbledon. 

To put things into perspective, Marcus Forss’ loan move to Wimbledon makes perfect sense, given that he is still only 20 and far from a finished article who could have made a massive impact in the Championship for the Bees. 

The Finnish U-21 international is held in high regard at Griffin Park and he definitely has a big future at Brentford but a drop to a lower division should make it easier for him to hone his skills and work on the flaws in his game. 

However, the departure of Forss means that Brentford now have Ollie Watkins as the only player capable of leading the line as a centre-forward. 

The likes of Emiliano Marcondes, Sergi Canos, Said Benrahma and Joel Valencia are all suited to playing in wide positions in the attacking third and an injury to Watkins could render the Bees short of quality cover. 

Also, the Bees could have opted to keep the 20-year-old at the club as a useful back-up option up top, as he apparently has the quality to fill in the void left by the departure of Neal Maupay.

Well, now that he has already completed a loan move, Thomas Frank will be hoping that Forss returns as a more complete player next summer, which would allow him to use the young striker on a more regular basis in the Championship.
