Brendan Rodgers Says, “Liverpool Are Still Not A Top Four Team”

Share

Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool have started the season on a high note winning three out of three. Much of this can be credited to striker Daniel Sturridge who has scored all the three winning goals in as many matches. But Rodgers can sense that there can be a clash of ego once Luis Suarez becomes available for selection and comes back into the team. Suarez has been the main man for Liverpool for the past seasons and has fired in the goals. But since his ten match suspension for biting Ivanovic during the clash with Chelsea last season, Sturridge has really stepped in and done his job excellently and thus Rodgers insists that both these strikers will share the responsibilities once the Uruguayan returns.

Brendan Rodgers

“Liverpool isn’t that type of club. It’s a club where players get told where to play. We don’t mollycoddle them, they are expected to come in and do a job. If they want to be the superstar, if they want to be the individual, they can forget it. It’s about the team and whatever they can bring to the team, they will do. We know what strikers are like, what they want. But I don’t think it’s an issue in this case.” Rodgers said.

“Neither of them will be the main man. This is based around a team. People were talking about Suarez being a one-man team last year, I kept saying we’re not and if you look at the results since, clearly we weren’t. I see them both as people. I was exactly the same at Chelsea, the boys there like John Terry will tell you that,” he added.

The fans would now hope that Rodgers’ statements would reflect on the field and both these players would form an invincible partnership on the field.

On other note, Rodgers has admitted that although Liverpool have started the season well, they are a long way off the top four and would need to spend cash like Spurs to get into that. Liverpool have added eight players to their squad this season but the manager believes that more quality is needed to reach the level of the top clubs.

“We still need to make improvements. Tottenham have spent £100m to try and get in the top four. It will take another few windows to get that quality in the group,” he mentioned.
