Newcastle’s hopes of winning the English Football League Cup were dashed on Tuesday night as they fell to a defeat at the games of Hull City at the KCOM Stadium.
The winner of the quarterfinal encounter had to be decided via penalty shootouts after a dramatic match saw both sides score within 2 minutes in 1st half of added time.
Mohamed Diamé, the same man whose goal sent Hull to the top flight almost decided the Tigers fate again as his 98th-minute strike looked to have sealed their exit.
However, Newcastle’s defence were caught napping as it took less than 60 seconds for the hosts to pull level. Robert Snodgrass pounced on a loose ball after Sels spilt Henriksen’s 20-yarder shot to hit back instantly.
None of the sides could get a winning goal until the end of extra time, and the game was decided by penalties.
Hull won after scoring 3 of theirs, while only Atsu found the back of the net of Newcastle’s 4, with Shelvey, Gayle and Gouffran all missing to hit the target.
Here are the player ratings for the Magpies’ performances.

Also gave support to the attack.

Made a vital challenge to stop Diomande at the edge of the box and did put in a lot of work at the back for the visitors.

The left-back almost put Newcastle in the lead in 1st half of extra time with a well-struck shot in close range, only to be denied by the crossbar.

Was replaced with Atsu in the closing minutes of regular time after a great performance which saw him almost getting the goal, but his strike could only go inches high.
Rating : 7/10
A great game and a solid display from Newcastle’s best player all through the night.
The former Swansea man created many chances and tried his luck at goal, but fumbled his spot kick by shooting tamely at Jakupovic.
Rating : 6/10
The former Gunners only has the upright to blame for not scoring in the first half with a low drive blast that looked goal-bound after he won the ball back.
Rating : 7/10
Another weak kick from the Frenchman which sent Hull City through to the semis following Jakupovic’s save.
Bar that, he was brilliant all night.
Rating : 6/10
Almost got his goal earlier on and also saw the ref waved away a penalty claim after his cross was blocked by Maguire’s arm.
Did well to open the scoring, until the defence let him down.
Rating : 8/10
Assisted Diame’s goal and was unlucky not to convert his penalty no thanks to the crossbar.
Tested Jakupovic all-day and almost scored a late winning goal with a header, but was denied by Hull’s brilliant goalie.

Converted his kick to send the keeper the wrong way, but it wasn’t enough.
