Chelsea Player Ratings

Chelsea finally played like the champions they are, thrashing a poor Newcastle side for five goals at Stamford Bridge. The game was pretty much over within 17 minutes as Chelsea flew out of the blocks to establish a 3-0 lead to leave the visitors shell-shocked. While Chelsea were rampant while Newcastle were dismal, and drop into the bottom three, as the pressure on them intensifies once again. Pedro was the main man for the Blues today with two goals in either half. Newcastle did score a consolation goal when Andros Townsend scored a beautiful long-ranger at the death.

Diego Costa

Thibaut Courtois

A virtual spectator for most of the match but was still alert when called upon once or twice. Will be very disappointed not to have kept a clean sheet. 7

Cesar Azpilicueta

Did not have a lot to do for much of the afternoon, hence spent most of his time in the attacking third. Created two chances and produced a number of crosses into the box. 8

Branislav Ivanovic

Didn’t not have the best of days at the back, misplaced a few passes. Seems to be really struggling this season. His faults were overshadowed due to Chelsea’s complete domination. 6

John Terry

Kept Aleksandar Mitrovic under control until  he landed awkwardly after an aerial challenge and had to come off. With PSG up next, every Chelsea fan must be keeping their fingers crossed that the injury is not that serious. 7

Gary Cahill

A rare league start for him in the absence of injured Zouma. Had a very comfortable afternoon at the back with Newcastle offering next to nothing. Bigger challenges up ahead for him. 7

Nemanja Matic

Was solid in the middle of the park, protected his back four whenever the visitors attacked. Passed with high accuracy, one of the better days he has had this season. 8

Cesc Fabregas

The Spanish pass master was at his best, providing a delicious long ball for Pedro’s second. Linked up well with his teammates quite frequently and sliced open Newcastle’s defense on a number of occasions. 8

Willian

Set up Costa’s opener with a beautiful through ball and then got on the scoresheet himself with a lovely goal in the 17th minute. Player of the season for Chelsea by far. 8

Eden Hazard

Returning to the starting lineup, the Belgian impressed throughout the game. Didn’t see much of the ball in the box but looks to be getting back in form after the dismissal of Jose Mourinho. 7

Pedro

Man of the match on the day, scored two very good goals separated by the half time whistle. Should be happy with the performance, after he has been in and out of the team due to injury and bad form. 8

Diego Costa

Costa is back! Outmuscled Ryan Taylor for the opener in the initial stage of the match. That was his eighth goal in the last 10 matches. He is getting better day by day under the new manager. 8
