English Premier League

Why This Arsenal’s Rising Star is The “next Henry” and not this Manchester United’s big money signing.

A young gun on the block in the Premier League table is making a name for himself in recent games. No one really knew about him last season but he did show some glimpses of what he can do and now is in the limelight playing regularly for a top side.

Alex Iwobi is certainly living the dream and his recent performances will certainly have given him a lot of confidence and have given a lot for the Arsenal fans to think about. Iwobi has two goals and two assists to his name in the Premier League this season, despite having played just eight games, out of which he started in only three.

The 19-year-old Nigerian is someone who has a lot of pace and has shown that playing on the big stage does not faze him. Another striker who has been doing the job in the top end of the pitch is Anthony Martial, who joined Manchester United for a huge fee at the start of the season.

The Frenchman at United has often been likened to Thierry Henry but Iwobi could be the man who takes the mantle as the next Henry simply because of what he has done so far in the Red of Arsenal.

The new Henry isn’t French

Thierry Henry was saved from his rather torrid time in Juventus by Arsene Wenger when he brought the youngster to Arsenal. Henry wasn’t always a striker that we all know him to be; in fact, he started his career as a winger under Wenger.

This allowed him to hone his skills and learn more about how to play and cut in and have a run at defenders. However, Henry was known for his finishing as well and that is something that Iwobi does seem to have the ability to do.

In the game against Everton and then against Watford, he was cool and calm as he slotted past the respected goalkeepers but it seems that the 19-year-old has had a link with the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil for years.

Iwobi seems to be part of the Arsenal first team but it has only been a few months when the youngster has actually been part of the team. Martial might have started the season on a high but he hasn’t grown all that much.

Be that because of how Louis van Gaal thinks about the team and his tactics that get deployed, Martial just does not seem to be able to do enough on the pitch. Iwobi doesn’t just blow past defenders, which Henry did rather easily during his best years but he has intelligence which gets him into good positions on the pitch but as stated, his link-up play with the rest of the team displays a level of maturity which most players don’t get even after years at the top.

Iwobi has what it takes to be the best but that can only be achieved if he keeps performing the way he has for Arsenal. He might have been an unknown player at the start of the campaign but now he is the future for Arsenal and that is a good thing for all.
