Arsenal’s £40m summer budget is a joke and Unai Emery certainly deserves a bigger budget to improve his squad – opinion

Why Unai Emery deserves more transfer backing in the summer window

According to a report in the Mirror, Arsenal manager Unai Emery will only have a mere £40m fund to spend during the upcoming summer transfer window. As a result of this restricted budget, the Gunners boss would be forced to be reserved in his approach to spending money as he seeks to improve his squad ahead of the new season.

The Gunners had a lean winter window this season where Emery himself revealed that the club had no money to spend in January. Hence, they were only successful in bringing Denis Suarez on loan from Barcelona.

Here’s why Arsenal should provide more financial backing to the manager in the summer – the Spaniard deserves it:

Unai Emery

Arsenal’s ambitions not dovetailing with spending plans

Safe to say, Arsenal were at shambles when Unai Emery arrived in the summer. The great Arsene Wenger reign didn’t end in a way many of us would have liked, leaving the new manager with a lot to do before preparing the team to challenge for league titles and top-flight European honours.

Hence, in that respect, Emery has done a very good job, especially considering the fact the club hasn’t backed him up to a full extent in the two transfer windows thus far. The Gunners are currently sixth in the table, but have a very good chance of playing Champions League football next season.

They will also be aiming to compete well in the Europa League and go all the way this year. That competition resumes this month. Thus, despite the off-field negativity, the new manager has done enough so far to make it a potentially positive season for the club.

If we look at the current squad, the team requires a major operation at the back, which has been their problem since the Wenger days. The other issue is the lack of width in the forward line, and hence, a quality out-and-out winger is also needed.

For that to happen, a small budget of £40m won’t be enough by any stretch of the imagination, especially in an era where the market inflates at a rate of knots. Therefore, given that the manager has done well with limited resources, the club now must back him with more money in the summer so that he can buy the players he wants and build a solid all-around team.
