According to Mirror, Arsenal are preparing a sensational bid for Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan. Wenger wants to add a defensive midfielder to his squad and Arsenal are ready to pay £20m for the German midfielder.
Gundogan was one of the star performers for Borussia last season. In 44 games, he scored 4 times and gave 3 assists. He also scored in the champions league final against Bayern Munich. More than his attacking skills, his defensive and ball winning skills earned him more praises.
As one of the most developed players in the last couple of seasons, the German International could very well fit in this Arsenal squad. He has accumulated a pass accuracy of 87% last season in his 28 league games, a total which betters the rest of the squad, and also amassed a tackle success of 80%.
Combined with the likes of Cazorla and Arteta, his creative intelligence on top of his defensive stability can help Arsenal dictate the tempo and direction of the game, but it is his incessant work-rate that sets him apart from others in his position and with the rapid increase of German personnel at the Emirates, the midfielder could settle down quickly.
Meanwhile, BVB confirmed that they don’t see them selling Gundogan in near future and also expects the player to sign a contract extension soon. (his current contract ends in 2015).
BVB’s Sporting director Michael Zorc said (to German newspaper Westdweutche Allgermeine Zeitung),
“We are keen to sign new terms with Ilkay Gundogan. I am able to confirm that we have held talks with his father Irfan and we feel confident he will sign,”
But the rumors suggest that any bid over £20m will tempt BVB to sell their enforcer.
If Gundogan deal not go through, Arsenal will go for Bayern Munich midfielder Luis Gustavo as an alternative.
