Why singing Conor Coady from Wolves will solve Emery’s defence crisis

A report from the Mirror is suggesting that Arsenal are keen on signing Wolves centre-half Conor Coady. Arsene Wenger’s last couple of seasons in charge of Arsenal were quite miserable for the Gunners.

While their inconsistency was certainly infuriating, the total lack of motivation showcased by the players was much more frustrating.

While they have been far better this season, there are still a multitude of issues that he needs to be addressed before this Gunners side can challenge for trophies again.

While Alex Iwobi has usually been deployed on the left wing, his performances this term have been below par. He needs to improve quickly if he is to keep his place in the Gunners side in the long run.

His dribbling has been extremely ineffective and some of the decisions he’s made in the final third have been questionable above all else. While this certainly needs to be addressed, the defence has been far worse and should be Emery’s priority in the winter.

While Laurent Koscielny and Shkodran Mustafi have both been simply terrible on most occasions, Rob Holding and Sokratis Papastathopoulos are the only defenders who Emery can trust.

It seems as if Koscielny and Mustafi have forgotten how to defend as they’ve both made a number of individual mistakes this term which has cost Emery’s side many valuable points. A new defensive signing is necessary for this club to be able to challenge for the title in the coming seasons and Wolves defender Conor Coady seems like a good option.

Wolves have been in brilliant form all season and a large part of that is down to how well they’ve defended. Conor Coady has been at the heart of Nuno Espirito Santo’s 3-man defence, so much so that the report suggests he’s close to an England call-up.

Wolves are keen to tie the former Liverpool defender down by offering a new contract even though his current one has 2 years left.

He is a tall figure at the back and is a natural captain because of his amazing leadership skills. He has the potential to pull off what Virgil Van Dijk has been able to do at Liverpool. His position and calmness at the back will be a welcome change from the constantly panicking Mustafi. This would be an excellent move by Emery and would solve a lot of Arsenal’s problems.
