Arsenal opinion: The Gunners should reignite a move for Conor Coady

It was happy days for Arsenal fans when they were linked with Barcelona superstar Samuel Umtiti because the Gunners would finally get a proper world-class centre-back.

They needed one desperately but then came their budgetary issues. The Mirror has reported that the Gunners unfortunately only have around £40million to spend this summer.

And does put a move for quite a few stars out of their budget. It’s a struggle but one that the club will be able to overcome with the right blend of youth and experience.

William Saliba, Djene Dakonam and even Joachim Andersen have been touted as potential alternatives but nothing has materialized.

Instead, the club have continued to move about, using the past month or so to scout their targets. It has allowed the club to improve on a few areas but they need to make the move before things even take place.

They need to change their defensive line if they ever want to become Champions League contenders once again.

It’s also why conceding 52 goals in a single league season can no longer be feasible unless they score atleast double that. Things clearly need to change and that is exactly why a budget option like Conor Coady would work perfectly.

Arsenal was linked with the Wolverhampton star a few months ago, but that’s as far as things got, with no moves ever taking place.

He’s exactly the type of player they should be targeting to help reinforce their defence. They do not need a revolution at the back, which is what Manchester United are looking to do but what Arsenal need is someone within their reach, who can lead them forward.

The 25-year-old English international is that man and thanks to his past as a midfielder, Coady has been better than most of Arsenal’s backline.

His passing average borders on 85% and that combined with his defensive acumen is what has made him a key figure for Wolves and that could be a problem for Arsenal.

The Molineux stadium side are in the Europa League qualification stage, which has been a stunning rise for the club. And standing right there in the middle has been Conor Coady, the rock in Nuno Espirito Santo’s backline.

Furthermore, while Wolves and Conor Coady have extended their time together till 2023, Arsenal still have a chance to make the move. The new contract is a small obstacle and Arsenal have crossed divides much greater than that.

Conclusion

Arsenal need a few new additions but trouble will ensue once their budgetary issues come into play.

However, they cannot let that stop them from shoring up a defence that desperately needs to be reinforced and it’s exactly where someone like Conor Coady will help. The 25-year-old is at the peak of his powers and it’s a move that will help Arsenal.
