Arsenal opinion: Emery should let go of Sead Kolasinac

According to Mundo Deportivo (h/t Sun), Barcelona are looking to pick up Arsenal’s Sead Kolasinac from Arsenal for £20m. The Bosnian joined the Gunners in the 2017/18 season and has been a decent performer since his arrival.

Kolasinac made a great start to his Arsenal career, registering an assist in his very first game at the Emirates in a thrilling 4-3 win against Leicester City. The 25-year-old is fantastic going forward, zipping crosses in from the byline and is a great physical presence.

However, his best position is as a wing-back which is a very specific role that requires your team-mates to be just as capable of filling in other positions so that the wing-back can bomb on the flanks.

Unai Emery has used a 3 at the back system quite often this season due to the players that are available to him.

However, throughout his career, Emery has usually preferred to stick with a back-four. It’s only at Arsenal due to the many injuries suffered by the likes of Hector Bellerin and Rob Holding that he has had to change things drastically to make ends meet.

Arsenal will be without Champions League football and they’ll have to spend another year trying to make certain that they don’t repeat the same.

It has been reported that Arsenal will only have £40million to spend in the transfer window. It is important that they use this money wisely and try and recoup as much as possible from player sales.

Barcelona’s interest in Kolasinac suggests that they see him as an able back up for Jordi Alba.

The Bosnian as stated earlier is great going forward but can be a liability at the back and Unai Emery will be focusing all his attention on the defence because that’s the area where Arsenal’s biggest deficiencies lie. Kolasinac will become expendable if that’s the case.

Arsenal have a massive summer ahead after missing out on Champions League football for three straight years and are heading into a period where the clubs below the top-6 are as ambitious as they’ve ever been.

They also have an opportunity to pounce on Chelsea’s transfer ban and Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspurs’ poor form towards the end of the season. Kolasinac is surplus to requirements and this deal would benefit all parties involved.
