Why Arsenal should revive their interest and sign Gelson Martins

According to the Mirror, Premier League giants Arsenal are again keen on signing Gelson Martins, this time from Atletico Madrid. As per the Daily Star, the Gunners were interested in getting the winger last summer when he was at Sporting CP. However, the 23-year-old moved to the Spanish club.

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry, who is currently the manager French side Monaco, is also keeping close tabs on the player (h/t Mirror). Since the start of this season, he has only played 446 minutes of football in all competitions. This just depicts the idea of where he stands in Diego Simeone’s pecking order.

Here’s why Arsenal should completely revive their interest in the 23-year-old and sign him this month:

Arsenal’s need of a winger to further sharpen the attack

Arsenal are undergoing a transition period as a club under the new manager Unai Emery. There are various positions in which improvements are needed of some sort before they become a genuine top-four team in the league.

Right now, the defence requires a lot of operation despite keeping a clean sheet against Chelsea. In the attack, they have two of the best strikers in the league in Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The Gunners practically have only one first-team winger in their squad – Alex Iwobi. Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who is injured right now, used to play in the wide areas, however, his favoured position is the number 10.

We have seen Emery playing Aubameyang on the wing and while the Gabonese has the experience of playing there in the past, it doesn’t paint a pretty picture for the future.

Hence, it is clear that the north London side require an out-and-out winger in their squad to sharpen the forward line. They targeted Gelson Martins in the summer but couldn’t get him, but there is another chance with Atletico not using him on a regular basis. Arsenal need to take advantage of this situation and sign the Portuguese.

He possesses incredible pace and dribbling skills to run in behind the defenders and also take them on if required. The 23-year-old is chiefly a right winger but can ply his trade as a support striker.

Imagine when Hector Bellerin comes back from injury and combines with Martins on the right – such a rapid duo to have. What a prospect would that be! However, for that to happen, the Gunners need to sign the winger.
