According to the Daily Express, Arsenal have been linked with Espanyol’s central defender Mario Hermoso. He has had a fantastic campaign for Espanyol and was even called up to the Spanish national team after his performances in recent times.
The 23-year-old has a €40m release clause and Arsenal should just trigger the clause and add this fantastic talent.
Hermoso is a typical Spanish defender, who bases his game around other Spanish legends like Gerard Pique and Sergio Ramos. He’s very good with his passing and is technically good enough to play for Arsenal. He also has the aggression required for the Premier League.
All of the above suggests that he should have no problem settling into Unai Emery’s system, which requires a player to be technically good on the ball with just the right amount of aggression.
The defender also carries a goal threat, having scored three for the Barcelona-based side after making 32 appearances in the La Liga.
Unai Emery has a massive summer ahead of him. Arsenal’s biggest area of weakness is central defence and their most important signing this summer has to be in that position.
Currently, the only reliable centre-back at the club is Sokratis Papastathopoulos. Koscielny isn’t getting any younger and has only a year left on his contract, which could lead to a sale.
Rob Holding was having a fine season until an injury halted his progress. The young Englishman was forming an interesting partnership with Sokratis. And about Shkodran Mustafi, the less said about the German, the better for Arsenal fans.
Arsenal will feel hard done by after having a lot of promising signs. They had gone on an unbeaten run, had a great form at home, made it to the Europa League final and even looked prime for 3rd place after their home win in the league over Manchester United.
Yet, it all came crashing down after a bit of a collapse during the final few league games and a humbling defeat at the hands of Chelsea in the Europa League final. This also meant that they lost out on some valuable prize money and a Champions League spot.
