Arsenal Injury Update: Vermaelen Taking Injections To Avoid Surgery And Concerns Over Wilshere

Share

It is going from bad to worse for the Gunners as captain Thomas Vermaelen may not be ready before the Champions league clash against Bayern Munich. Having missed his International duty with Belgium in the mid-week, the defender continued to be on the sidelines when the Gunners travelled to the stadium of lights.

Vermaelen is slowly turning to be an injury prone player with various problems over his left leg. After having sat on the treatment table for more than 12 months, Vermaelen continued to miss games for Arsenal in regular intervals even after his return. It is now believed that the defender is now taking anti-inflammatory injection in his ankle to avoid a surgery.

Although he is expected to resume light training this week, Arsene Wenger is likely to rest Vermaelen for Arsenal’s FA cup clash against Blackburn in a hope that the defender will be fit to face Bayern Munich.

With Keiran Gibbs already out, Laurent Koscielny still struggling with his calf problems, Arsene Wenger decided to start Sagna at centre back along side Mertesacker and Jenkinson was called up from the bench. Though Arsenal managed to keep a clean sheet against Sunderland, it will be a huge ask for their defenders to play out of position against world class attackers when they face Bayern.

Left back Monreal will be cup tied for the Champions league game and Arsenal will be left with Francis Coquelin and Ignasi Miquel to start at the left if Vermaelen does not recover on time.

Concerns over Jack Wilshere

Jack Wilshere has played almost all of Arsenal’s matches since he came from his fatigue injury and he is almost close to his 100% best now. Wilshere was withdrawn early in the second half of Sunderland’s game and it is believed that his injury is not bad as it was thought as Arsene Wenger revealed he should be back within 4 or 5 days.

It was a wise decision from Wenger to take him off and it is high time that Jack gets a rest. Arsenal play Blackburn at home in the FA Cup this weekend and the Gunners must cope without Wilshere if they want him to be 100% for Bayern’s clash.
