Championship side Derby County signed Andy King on a short-term loan deal from Leicester City during January transfer window. The 30-year-old made his Rams’ debut in the home victory over Hull City in the weekend and got his first start in the 1-1 draw against Ipswich Town last week.
At the current point in time, Frank Lampard’s men are seventh in the table, two points away from the playoff spots. Without a shadow of a doubt, their target is to be in the top-six come the end of this season and have a chance to get promoted to the Premier League.
Even though their league form has been slightly scratchy since the turn of the year, they have enough quality to at least be in the playoffs in a few months’ time.
As of now, they have players who start on a regular basis on loan from various other clubs. A prime example is Harry Wilson, who is having an unbelievable season so far, but is a borrowed player from Liverpool till May. Mason Mount, Fikayo Tomori and now Andy King are other examples.
In whatever position they finish this season, the Rams should make sure the core players remain in the team. Here’s why the club must keep hold of one of them – Andy King beyond the summer:
King is an experienced player who has the Championship pedigree and knows what it takes to get promoted – having done so with Leicester in 2013/14 season.
The 30-year-old is also a versatile player, who will help the team in different ways. He can in as one of the double-pivot or as a number 10 in the 4-2-3-1 formation, or can operate as one of the wide midfielders in the 4-3-3 system.
Hence, in a way, the Welshman is a manager’s delight and he always gives his 100% on the field to make the difference.
All in all, King know-how and talent could really help manager Lampard in building the midfield shape around the player. As per the report in Derby Telegraph, the loanee from Leicester has hinted on staying at Pride Park beyond the summer, if the promotion bid gets successful.
His current contract the King Power Stadium expires at the end of next season. Therefore, he will be in his last 12 months of the deal in the summer.

It is clear that Andy King could stay at Derby if they play Premier League football next season. The Rams are anyway chasing the same thing in the remaining months of this campaign.
However, regardless of the fate of the club ahead of the start of next season, they should convince the Leicester City man to commit to a long-term future and build a team around his experience.
