A Red Card For The First Time In 5 Years: Is It The End For This Chelsea Legend?

Share

John Terry’s time at Chelsea isn’t going all that great this season. One of the best players in the league last season, he has struggled to perform for the English Champions and was sent off in the last game against West Bromwich Albion. The Champions have also conceded seven goals in just three games, something which you do not expect from a Jose Mourinho side.

Where has it all gone wrong for Terry?

Something just doesn’t seem right for Chelsea at the moment; maybe Jose has seen it and tried to prove a point when he substituted the Chelsea captain at Manchester City. Mourinho would never drop his captain and the reason provided by the Portuguese wasn’t the best either, Chelsea still shipped in three goals and they could have conceded more, it is true as well that they could have been three or four down had Aguero taken his chances in the first half.

The problem should have been rectified in the transfer window, Chelsea have been searching for a top central defender and have marked John Stones from Everton but the transfer doesn’t seem close to being resolved.

The lack of communication between Terry and his central defensive partner is another issue, both Gary Cahill and Kurt Zouma are good defenders but communication is key between any world class defensive pairing. Terry is vocal with his partners but that doesn’t seem to be working at the moment.

It isn’t just Terry who is struggling for Chelsea, Ivanovic and Courtois haven’t been at their best either. Pace seems to be another issue for Terry, it was pace which Chelsea needed, according to Mourinho when Terry was substituted against Manchester City. Pace was never an asset for Terry, but he was always able to tune his game based on his opponents and dealt with it. This seems to be missing from the Chelsea captain’s game this season.

While pace might be an issue for Terry, another problem seems to be his dealing with the physicality of the players. While Salomon Rondon blitzed past Terry this weekend, he could not deal with the physicality of Gomis in the opening day of the league either. This again would surprise a lot of Chelsea supporters and even match day pundits, how has someone who looked to be in the prime of his life just a few months ago completely fallen off the cliff?

The league is only three games old but Chelsea are already playing catch up with a lot of the top sides and Manchester City look to be in great form at the moment. A player does not go bad overnight, Terry and Chelsea know that. What Terry needs is to play a few more games and get out of the rut, maybe Jose has to go back to his ‘Thou Shalt Not’ lose tactics and play two defensive midfielders ahead of the centre-backs to give them more protection. Terry’s career is far from over at Chelsea, but he does need support from the other players to get his and Chelsea’s season back on track.
