Liverpool take on Manchester City in the first leg of their blockbuster Champions League quarter-final on Wednesday.
Liverpool and City are two of the most exciting sides in the Premier League and Jurgen Klopp’s men were the first to hand Pep Guardiola’s men a loss in the domestic top-flight this season.
With both sides delivering on the pitch this season, there are no favourites in this mouthwatering clash.
Ahead of the big game, here we pick a combined line-up featuring top players from both the teams.
No prizes for guessing. Ederson gets into my team for consistently being solid between the sticks this season. The Brazilian was an easy choice ahead of Liverpool’s Loris Karius.
While Liverpool young guns Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold have performed extremely well this season, there is no denying that Kyle Walker has been immense for City.
Otamendi has been rock solid at the back for City this campaign. The Argentine looks to have finally settled down in the Premier League, emerging as one of the standout performers with his awareness and positioning at the back.
Klopp has had a lot of problems in the defence, with the German tactician tinkering between the likes of Joel Matip, Dejan Lovren and Ragnar Klavan.
But since arriving at Anfield in January, Virgil van Dijk has helped the club with his reading and game awareness.
Robertson has been solid on the left-hand side for the Reds. The Scotsman had to battle it out with Alberto Moreno and after some consistent displays, he has established himself as the club’s first choice in that position.
Fernandinho’s performances this season have been very crucial for City. It’s his presence at the base of the midfield that makes this City team such a delight to watch. He does the dirty job, retains the ball and sprays it around to his teammates with utmost comfort. An easy pick!
Arguably one of the first names on this team sheet, De Bruyne has been a standout performer this campaign. His ability to pick passes, find spaces and cut open the opposition in a blink of an eye is second to none. The Belgian’s creativity and attacking prowess could see him walk into any of Europe’s top elite clubs.
One of the most consistent players in the Premier League, this team without the presence of effervescent David Silva is tough to imagine. The Spaniard does the job silently, picks his passes and provides the ball for the striker to feast on.
The hottest property in the Premier League this season, Mohamed Salah’s inclusion is easy and he gets the nod ahead of Leroy Sane. The Egyptian’s importance to the Reds needs no further description and he is a major contender for this season’s player of the year award.
Sterling has been a player reborn under Guardiola. Although Mane has been good for Liverpool, there is no way he gets here ahead of Sterling, who has been an influential figure for the Cityzens this term.
Aguero or Firmino? There is no debate whatsoever as Aguero a country mile ahead of Firmino. No disrespect to Firmino but Aguero is one of the most lethal strikers on the planet and when he is in the team, you would feel confident about winning the game.
