Why West Ham Must Secure The Signing Of Mario Balotelli In The Summer

West Ham United have undoubtedly been one of the most disappointing teams in the Premier League this season. Initially expected to rise as a PL heavyweight shortly after the establishment of the London Stadium, the Hammers have performed way below expectations in the past few seasons.

This season, in particular, has been an awful one for the London giants as they are dawdling on the wrong side of the table. Currently sitting 17th in the Premier League standings, West Ham United have registered 30 points this season, only two more than the 18th-placed Southampton, meaning the Hammers are in for a relegation fight as we approach the final phase of the season.

Head coach David Moyes is in desperate need of an upturn in fortunes as his team is constantly failing to gather enough points. With just eight games remaining until the end of the season, West Ham at least need to register three victories in order to escape relegation but with games against Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea still pending, the task looks tough indeed for the former United manager.

Therefore, the club might once again be in for a busy transfer schedule in the upcoming summer transfer window. West Ham, who weren’t really at it in the last summer window, could undergo a squad overhaul this summer. And as per recent reports, the London giants are interested in the services of Nice striker Mario Balotelli.

Lack of attacking potency has been one of the main reasons behind West Ham’s demise season. Despite boasting of a top class attacking lineup consisting of Javier Hernandez, Marko Arnautovic and Manuel Lanzini amongst many others, the Hammers are somehow lacking the end product.

New signing Javier Hernandez’s performances, despite being the joint-top scorer for West Ham this season, have been highly unsatisfactory. The Mexican international isn’t suited to David Moyes’ style of football, which does require athleticism as well as aerial prowess.

Mario Balotelli, in that regard, could be a perfect alternative for the Mexican superstar attacker next season. The Italian, who has emerged as a shock target for West Ham, has been playing some scintillating football since moving to Ligue 1 a few seasons ago.

The former Manchester City star has notched up an astonishing total of 39 goals in just 59 appearances for the French giants. His strong physical presence coupled with his impressive aerial-abilities is perfectly suited to David Moyes’ style of play, while he has the experience as well.

Balotelli, who is highly regarded as one of Premier League’s worst signings ever when he moved to Liverpool in 2014, certainly has all the right qualities to emerge as a cult hero for West Ham United. Therefore, it will be interesting to see what moves do West Ham make in order to secure Balotelli’s signing in the upcoming summer transfer window.
