3 Well-Drilled & Underrated CBs Tottenham Should Look To Sign This January

Share

Spurs have remained one of the best sides defensively in the topflight this season, shipping the 2nd least goals (12) behind league leaders Chelsea, following 17 league games.

The centre back pairing of Belgium internationals Jan Jan Vertonghen, and Toby Alderweireld have proven to be very effective in keeping the goals out and oppositions’ chances limited, and they remain one of the best, if not the best central half partnership in the league right now.

But injuries always do threaten to tear their perfect working relationship apart, with the 2 separately spending time on the sidelines over the course of the past 8 months.

Kevin Wimmer and Eric Dier haven’t proven to be quality backups enough, and if Pochettino is to see his side never let the guard down at any point of the season no matter what happens to his choice centre backs, additional legs fitting the bill come January must be brought in.

Here are 3 of such fine options for the job:These 3 are well-drilled players who will fit perfectly to Tottenham’s gameplay and they are relatively underrated which means the Lilly Whites can get them without much competition in the market.

1. Gimenez

Gimenez

The 21-year-old Uruguayan could follow in the path of Alderweireld to Tottenham, as he has also struggled to seal down a regular starting place at the Vicente Calderon despite his quality, and might not hesitate to agree to a switch in order to try his luck elsewhere.

New competition definitely abounds at Spurs, with the 29-year-old Jan Vertonghen a most likely candidate for the highly-rated and talented Gimenez to challenge.

He would do just fine as a cover and understudy too. Despite being a regular for the South American country, he has only been able to make 5 appearances across the Champions League and La Liga this term.

His standout qualities include blocking the ball, tackling and a very high level of concentration. Gimenez can also pass for a ball-playing defender and he is no doubt a thorough-bred considering how impressive he has grown under Simeone.

2. Presnel Kimpembe

The France youth international is also a player that could be lured to the White Hart Lane come January, and at 21, he has a whole lot ahead of him in the coming years.

His rapid development and continuous blossoming into a fine centre half has already seen the Paris Saint-Germain youngster earn a national team call up this year, and he is quite the solid defender due to his no-nonsense style of play.

Despite stiff competition from Marquinhos and Silva, Kimpembe has still managed to play 9 Ligue 1 games this term, averaging a 92% pass accuracy and winning 1.8 of his aerial duels. His excellent passing abilities make him capable of playing the ball from the back, and he would definitely make a great addition to the Tottenham’s rank.

3. Jaïro Riedewald

The 20-year-old Ajax defender brings versatility and unbelievably, experience to the fore. Riedewald isn’t only a solid centre-half, he is also able to play well as a defensive midfielder and also in central midfield.

Since breaking into the first team 3 seasons ago, the newly capped Dutch international has gone on to make 54 Eredivisie appearances for Ajax and establish himself as an integral member of the team.

His precise passing abilities (92% success rate) dribbling, marking and positioning are standout strengths, and he also has European experience under his belt. Jairo can be the perfect option off the bench for Spurs as the 2nd half of the campaign gets underway.
