3 Underrated Players Tottenham Should Target in the January Window

Tottenham Hotspur have been in excellent form since the festive season this term and are hot on the tails of league leaders Chelsea as they go about chasing the elusive Premier League trophy.

The goals are flowing in nicely with Harry Kane and Dele Alli hitting top form whereas Christian Eriksen and Son Heung-Min have chipped in with important strikes as well. The midfield comprising of Victor Wanyama and Moussa Dembele has looked stronger than ever, with young Harry Winks providing able back-up. The defence too has been performing top-notch with the full-backs Kyle Walker and Danny Rose in the form of their lives while the centre-back trio of Eric Dier, Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld have made this Tottenham defence one of the best in the league.

However, a recent injury to Vertonghen, that ruled him out for a long-time and Alderweireld’s hamstring problem on Saturday against Manchester City, will no doubt have left Mauricio Pochettino sweating. And additional cover in the midfield and a back-up striker is also something the Argentine would be looking at, along with bringing in a wide-player, which has been the priority for quite some time now. With the January window set to close in about a week’s time, we take a look at three underrated players Spurs should bring in to help out their title campaign as the business end of the season approaches:

Ben Gibson

The Middlesbrough centre-back has been excellent this term for Aitor Karanka’s team. The 24-year old has started all the Premier League games for Boro and has performed so admirably that he has been tipped with a call up for the England national team.

Averaging a high 8 defensive actions per game, Gibson has demonstrated excellent reading and awareness at the heart of the defence and at the same time has shown he can pick his teammates out accurately from the back, with a pass completion rate of 85% and an average pass length of 22m, giving a hint of his ball-playing abilities.

With his current performances and the way he plays, he could be a perfect addition for Tottenham and could easily slot in on the left-side of the three-man defence during Vertonghen’s prolonged absence.

Junior Stanislas

The 27-year old winger has been a prominent player for Bournemouth this season. An explosive winger, Stanislas can operate on either flank and can also deputize as a wing-back if needed.

The Englishman has scored four goals for the Cherries this term and is their second highest scorer behind striker Callum Wilson. Stanislas also has five assists go along with his goals. With his pace and trickery, he has demonstrated that he can pose a serious threat on the flanks and can create chances and contribute with crucial goals as well.

He may not be in the limelight much, but Stanislas has displayed that he could be a potent option to have on the wings and could prove to be an impact player for Pochettino and Spurs.

Callum Wilson

Bournemouth’s leading goalscorer this season, with 6 goals, Callum Wilson could be the perfect addition for Tottenham as they look to get a back-up striker to fill in for Harry Kane.

Vincent Janssen arrived in the summer and has failed to adjust to the conditions and the ways of the English game, leaving Spurs pretty short-handed in terms of options up front. Wilson, on the other hand,  is experienced to the rigours and the physicality of the English football, and has shown he can score goals at this level.

At 24 years of age, Wilson still has his best years ahead of him and he could prove to be a shrewd piece of investment for Tottenham as they look to strengthen their squad in their bid to achieve the Premier League crown.
