The only good thing which came out from the Ireland-England friendly was the performance of Jack Wilshere, the Arsenal midfielder was the bright spark for England all game and in his deeper role revelled and finally showed what he could do once he is fit and raring to go. He did have a curtailed season last year due to various injuries and there were a couple of run-ins with Arsene Wenger and then the FA at the end of the season.
If Jack is to become one of the best English players of his generation, he will have to do a few things which would help him fulfil his potential and we provide three things that Wilshere should do to ensure he reaches his pinnacle and not burn out before he gets to shine regularly.
1. Curb his attacking intent
We all saw how well he did playing in a three-man midfield for England and while that may not be his best position, playing really deep, if Jack Wilshere can learn how to drop back and also learn when to attack, he could turn into one of the best midfielders in the Premier League.
Knowing when to go forward and when to help out his defence can be immensely useful for any team and Wilshere needs to learn this trait really well. It isn’t always about attacking which helps a team out, Wilshere has a great engine in him, that is for sure and matching that with game intelligence would be the best thing for the Englishman to achieve his potential.
2. Stay injury free
Well this might not be up to him but he has to remain injury free next season, there have been too many stop starts in his relatively short career at Arsenal, He missed a large chunk of the season last year and only came back into the team in the last few weeks.
Injuries don’t just keep you out of the team, they hamper your progress and if Wilshere does want to become better, he has to stay relatively injury free for a couple of seasons. It might not be easy for him to remain completely injury free, but he has to avoid the long-term injuries which have blighted his career so far.
3. Be a role model for others
The entire smoking issue wasn’t blown out of proportion; Wilshere has to be more responsible with his actions off the field as well as on them. While playing football, he doesn’t do much wrong in his demeanour and behaviour, off the pitch, he has to buckle up.
He even had a bit of a run in with the FA thanks to his rather tasteless slander on Tottenham after the FA Cup win by Arsenal, we all know that we love a bit of banter and fun at our rival’s expense, but Jack is a professional football and that kind of behaviour is not expected from someone who is playing for the team. He needs to check his off-field behaviour and set standards for others to follow and that could help him be more disciplined in his footballing career as well.
