2. Alex on Song against United
For all the talk of the brilliance of Stewart Downing in his new role at the tip of the diamond in midfield, there is no doubt that it is Alex Song who has been the Hammers’ player of the season so far. His move from Barcelona although unexpected, has given West Ham, the boost they needed to kick on and move forward and news that the Cameroon international wants to make his move permanent will please the supporters to no end.
Against United, Song put in a performance that exemplified all of his qualities and showed just why he is still one of the finest defensive midfielders in the world. Although his primary job was to stay in front of the back four and protect them, the 27-year-old ventured forward, provided some crisp passes, started attacks and didn’t let the visitors’ start-studded midfield settle on the ball. If he continues with performances like this, the Hammers stand a very good chance of, if not finishing fourth, but at least in the Europa League places.
