Three Strikers Who Derby County May Look To Sign Before The Transfer Window Closes

Although I have a lot of time for Chris Martin, as I’m sure Derby fans do as well to whatever degree, the cruel fact is that those sides which end up gaining automatic promotion almost always have a 20-goal striker in their squad.

Last season, the likes of Dwight Gayle, Glenn Murray, Tammy Abraham and Chris Wood were prolific and all got their rewards, personally or collectively in the end. Derby have a solid looking squad with the likes of Carson, Davies and Huddlestone looking after the spine of the side from the back. But, a goal scorer is surely needed.

Here we look at three remaining possibilities for the Rams if they are to finally get their big hitter up front:

Che Adams (Birmingham City)

Until now, I wasn’t sure what the fuss was about with Adams who has been coveted by several clubs during the summer transfer window, but his hat-trick in the League Cup on Tuesday night showed his quality and this looks like being his breakthrough year.

The 21-year-old managed just 7 goals in 40 Championship appearances last season but he was a young man playing in a particularly miserable Birmingham side for most part and could yet turn out to be the real deal.

Abel Hernandez (Hull City)

Hull City have shown a willingness (or a need) to sell players and Derby have already taken advantage by bringing in both Curtis Davies and Tom Huddlestone from the Tigers this summer.

Hernandez, in terms of finishing chances at least, would represent a step up on what they have in the squad right now and in fact, when he last played in this division two years ago, the Uruguayan netted 21 times in 42 games, as his side went up. He is a goal machine indeed.

James Wilson (Manchester United)

Although he made only four appearances in the Championship for the East Midlands outfit, Wilson has been at Derby before and did little wrong before finding himself at the club during another tumultuous time with the increasingly unpopular Steve McClaren at the helm.

Having been given just 223 minutes of league football last season, it is impossible to judge how well he settled within the Derby camp. With a new manager though, and a comforting look at his Championship record from the season before, we can make a fair guess that he’ll do very well if given the chance.

The 2015/16 season saw Wilson represent Brighton at this level at just 20 years of age, scoring 5 and making 2 in 25 appearances in the regular part of the league season. He averaged just 47 minutes per game that season though, so bearing that in mind and taking into consideration the natural level of improvement, he would comfortably reach 10-15 league goals next term in my opinion, something that Derby cannot afford to turn down.
