3 replacements for Gerrard: Is this English midfielder ready to take the big step?

Share

Liverpool fans will now need to get used to seeing a Liverpool team without Gerrard, the Liverpool captain announced that he would be moving away from the club in the summer transfer window and that means for the first time since the 1998-99 season, Liverpool will play a season without the English midfielder.

While Liverpool do have Jordan Henderson who has been named as a player who could take up the Gerrard role, there are a couple of better options available who could be brought into the club. Replacing ” target=”_blank”>Gerrard will be a tough task but nothing is impossible in football and here are 3 replacements for the Liverpool legend, who could do the job for Liverpool.

1. Radja Nainggolan

The 26 year old Belgian has become one of the best players at AS Roma, with Kevin Strootman injured and slowly making his comeback; Nainggolan has taken the lead and has become a stalwart for Roma.

It was a bit of a surprise he wasn’t selected into the final squad for the Belgian side but he hasn’t let that mess up his season. Nainggolan is a midfielder who likes to play in deep and then make runs often linking up with the forwards. He can even speak English fluently so language won’t be a barrier for the Belgian international.

2. Fabian Delph – Is he ready to take the big step?

Delph was always considered a talent since his early days at Leeds United and he made a switch to Aston Villa in 2009 but he didn’t really shine for the club and was sent back on loan in 2012. The move to the Premier League might have been a little early for the English midfielder but for the past 18 months he has become a much better player and an important player for Aston Villa.

The playmaker might not have the physicality that Gerrard possessed but Delph has slowly and surely become one of the best midfielders in the Premier League and if Liverpool do want to sign someone British then Delph could be the answer and he wouldn’t cost a huge fortune like the other players in the list.

3. Paul Pogba

Pogba

The 21 year old is probably the best young midfielder in the world; Juventus made a coup by signing him on a free from Manchester United and Pogba has just grown in his role for Juventus and France. Strong, good on the ball, energetic and has a brilliant shot in him, Pogba is well on his way to become one of the greatest midfielders in the world and a move to the Premier League could only help him become better.

The cost of bringing Pogba would be huge but he is the real deal already, he wouldn’t need time to settle in and is always raring to go. Liverpool would need to break the bank to sign him and Juventus would not mind selling him if they get the right price.
