3 Reasons Why Messi To Chelsea Will Never Happen

The silly season is about to being in a month’s time, the January transfer window beckons mortal souls to try and move away from their hellish nightmares at their current clubs and find more divinity clad clubs out to save their soul. It’s not just the players who want to make moves, clubs will be out with their scouting reports to snap up certain deals before they go and become expensive players or free agents in the June transfer window.

With the silly season starting, there can be some crazy stories being spread around and the most riveting story being told right now is that Lionel Messi may want to move away from his home for almost 10 years, Barcelona, 10 years since he made his debut for the Catalan outfit, he has been a Barca product through and through but him moving to any club would certainly shatter any transfer record ever made.

The valuation of the Argentine genius is estimated to be roughly close to 200 million Euros, that is the base price with which teams would have to start bidding, there are only a handful of clubs with that sort of money and Chelsea were one of the clubs whose name popped up. Backed by the financial power of Roman Abramovich, he can sign the cheques to bring the star forward to Chelsea however here are 3 reasons why the deal will never happen.

1. It is Jose Mourinho’s team and the team is greater than any individual

A Jose Mourinho team is never built around just one player, signing Messi would mean that he is the focal point of the team and that is something that has never been a feature of a Jose Mourinho team. Ever since he started his managerial career at Benfica and then gained mainstream success with Porto, the team has always been greater than any individual. His teams have stars but none of them are more important than the way they play and their work ethic, he has often shunted out players who he deems are not necessary to the club, no matter how big the player might be, case in point Mata and Luiz.

2. FFP calling

Signing a player 5 years ago for some crazy money was possible but in this era of Financial Fair Play, signing someone for 200 million Euros is just not viable for a club to run. Chelsea would have to balance the books incredibly well to ensure they do not fall foul to the Financial Fair Play rules; they dodged FFP this season after the sale of David Luiz and Juan Mata earlier in the season.

Chelsea have been looking to increase their profits while running the club in a more organic manner, earlier this season they recorded the best profit under the Abramovich era and are slowly and steadily heading towards becoming a self-run club which does not rely on the owner.

Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck stated this after the news of the record profits were announced earlier in the month.

“In the era of FFP, we must progress commercially to continue the circle of success to invest in the team and get results.”

Signing Messi just will not be a logical expenditure.

3. Change the entire structure of the team

Accommodating Messi into the Chelsea team would be a huge ask, not only financially but also tactically. Chelsea play with one striker supported by wingers and Messi is the player who plays down the middle mostly for Barcelona. They do not rely completely on crosses but rather have some brilliant link up play between the 3 forwards, Messi, Suarez and Neymar. At Chelsea it is more of a 4-5-1 with Cesc Fabregas doing a lot of the hard work and playing his team mates in, be it Diego Costa or the wingers, Eden Hazard and Willian.

Messi prefers to play down the middle and bringing him into the Chelsea team would just disrupt the formation and would mean a lot of players would need to be shuffled about to accommodate the Argentine, that would be a very huge task for the Chelsea team, when something isn’t broken why try to fix it?
