The Udinese midfielder Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu is rumoured to top Brendan Rodgers’ January wishlist. Here are 3 reasons why he would be worth the money and effort to sign.
Players with a huge physical presence don’t have the massive upper hand in Serie A or La Liga that they do in the Premier League, because the Premier League is a more rough and physical game. It’s not to say that they never do well, but if you look at the likes of Patrick Vieira, who is one of the Premier League’s all time great midfielders, struggled in Serie A with spells at AC Milan, Juventus and Inter. Though it is not always the case, the likes of Sulley Muntari have been a hit in both countries, and there is no reason why Agyemang-Badu would not be either. At Udinese, he has become renowned for his pace and strength, and also his ability to break up attacks and launch counters. While he could do that at Liverpool, his physical prowess would also help him become a Premier League hit.
Liverpool currently don’t have an orthodox defensive midfielder. They have the likes of Lucas Leiva and Jordan Henderson who can fill in, but nobody who thrives on front of the defence, and when the big games come, it shows. After losing to Chelsea and Manchester City recently, three of the four goals conceded against the two big guns were down to sloppy defensive play, and also a lack of protection in midfield, and it seems that Brendan Rodgers has noticed what the problem seems to be. Although Badu is a no nonsense, tough tackling midfielder general who is also only 23 years old, he would be a great addition to the squad, but would not fix all of Liverpool’s problems.
Liverpool’s midfield isn’t bad when taking everything into consideration, but is a little lopsided in attack, as all of their midfield talent are based on creativity, with the likes of Philippe Coutinho and Iago Aspas being their two standout names. Lucas Leiva is very good at what he does, and can launch counter attacks when needed, though Steven Gerrard is getting old and is a shadow of his former self, while Jordan Henderson is still not a top class midfielder, and most likely never will be. Badu would be able to add some competition, while also giving Liverpool a whole new midfield dimension to work with, of course only the Udinese man would not be enough to turn Liverpool’s midfield into a world class setup, instead of their borderline average core they currently host, but he would certainly be a start.
