Chris Wood was brilliant for Leeds until last season
Had Leeds United achieved promotion last season, then Chris Wood would have been given the credit as the main reason why. With a goal scored once in every 134 minutes in the Championship, Wood’s striking prowess was legendary and there’s no reason why he can’t continue his terrific form this time around.
Wood managed to outscore the likes of Tammy Abraham, Dwight Gayle and Glenn Murray last time around and there are high hopes that as a team, Leeds can do better this term. The new signings made by Thomas Christiansen as well as the more open nature of the division mean Leeds are fancied to get into the top six.
If that happens, you would imagine Wood’s chances would be even more plentiful. Here are three specific reasons why he may repeat his top scoring feat:

Chris Wood is nothing but a number nine, a proper centre-forward. He couldn’t care less what happens in a given game (results aside) apart from whether he can score a goal and gets frustrated when that doesn’t happen. The game needs more players like Wood!
Far be it from me to say that a player shouldn’t be in the Premier League, but many have looked too good for the Championship in the past, only to flop at the top level.
Benik Afobe, Jermaine Beckford, Jordan Rhodes and many others looked like they were ready for the step up but found it surprisingly difficult to find the net against the best teams in the country. Wood may yet make it there and is only 25 years old. However, when given his admittedly limited chances at West Brom and Leicester, he did not create a huge impression.
Last season though was a real breakthrough and another year in the Championship is right for him in all honesty. If I were him, at this stage, I’d rather hit 20 goals in this division than hit 5 in the Premier League.
No matter how good a finisher you are, as a confirmed and sometimes slightly static number nine, you will need chances laid on. Kemar Roofe and Hadi Sacko can only improve at their age, as can Ronaldo Vieira back in the midfield. So as Leeds’ support players improve, so will Wood’s chances in front of goal.
