3 Reasons Why This New Signing Will Make West Ham United A Strong Force At The Back

West Ham have announced the signing of Portuguese centre-back Jose Fonte for a fee of £8m from Southampton. The Saints will be gutted to see their skipper depart the club after years of excellent service. He departs the St. Mary’s after a successful summer with Portugal, with whom he won the Euro 2016 crown.

That form had actually seen him sensationally linked with a move to Manchester United, but the Saints held firm in their resolve to hang on to their skipper, but could only hold on to his services for a few months longer as Fonte chose to join West Ham and help them re-build after a stuttering and uneven first half of the season.

It is said that Fonte had begun to frustrate in the Southampton dressing room after a oorp run of results which saw them slip down the table. In Fonte, West Ham have an experienced head at the back and also someone who can be a good leader in the dressing room. They are now quite solid at the back, and here are 3 reasons why Fonte’s move to West Ham could be a boon to The Hammers –

He could form a solid partnership with Winston Reid

New Zealander Reid is a very good centre-back, but he has often lacked a suitable partner for him in defense. The likes of James Collins, Havard Nordveit and Angelo Ogbonna have failed to impress in that position this season and it can be seen as to why The Wes Ham board have opted for an experienced set of shoulders in the form of Fonte. He could stabilize a defence that has been leaky at times this term.
