3 Reasons Why Stoke City’s Xherdan Shaqiri Would Have Done Wonders For Liverpool

Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp will be happy with the progress they have made this season, standing just 6 points off the top of the table, 16 games into the season. The manager will be happy with the individual performances of the side recently but he would love to have more quality at his disposal at this crunch time. So it comes as a blow for Liverpool after reports revealed that former boss Brendan Rodgers could have landed a European star a couple of years ago.

Xherdan Shaqiri

Stoke City attacker Xherdan Shaqiri moved to England from Bayern Munich back in 2014 and is now a regular starter for the Potters this season. However, he has recently revealed that Liverpool were close to signing him before his Stoke move and that Bayern Munich blocked his move and wanted him to stay at the club. Though he is injury prone, he is a top class talent and here are three reasons why he is a perfect fit for Liverpool:

  1. His eye for goal:

Liverpool, with 41 goals, are currently the top scorers in the Premier League this season and are easily one of the most exciting sides in the competitions. They also have the highest number of goal-scorers in the squad making them a strong team and Shaqiri’s goal scoring prowess would have only made him more deadly. The Swiss international can score goals from different angles and ranges and has already scored some world class goals for club and country. Surely, he would have made this Liverpool side all the more dangerous.

2. Klopp’s style:

Though Shaqiri is not the strongest player around, he loves to put himself about on the field to try and win the ball and this would have made him a regular starter under Klopp at Anfield. The German manager loves his attackers to put in a defensive shift when needed and not every player will fit into this style easily. But Shaqiri, who has an inbuilt desire to sneak balls in dangerous areas would have been a perfect fit at Anfield. He would have taken no time to settle into the side and would have improved the overall strength of the side.

3. Versatility:

The 25-year old is comfortable playing on the flank or also through the middle and this is something Klopp likes in his players. Shaqiri loves to start from the right flank to cut into dangerous areas but he is also adept in playing a play maker’s role just behind the striker. He has a decent pace to burn and can also provide width when needed while his biggest threat is his path-breaking passes through the middle of the field. He would have added some dynamism to this Liverpool attack and would have helped Klopp chop and change his side without too much of an effect even during injuries. Surely, Shaqiri could have been a super addition for the Reds at least in the current season.
