Three Players Southampton must sign to regain lost ground in the league

Southampton have been quite productive in this transfer window, buying highly talented players to bolster their squad.

Saints just about survived a huge relegation scare last season and should be determined to get back to where they belong – the top-10. For that reason, they might as well have to buy one or two more players to add more strength in depth.

Here are the players they could buy to regain some of the lost ground in the Premier League table:

Maxi Gomez (ST)

Southampton struggled for goals last season, which was probably the reason why they dragged themselves into the relegation battle. The likes of Charlie Austin and Manolo Gabbiadini are not consistent enough to score regularly and propel the team towards valuable points.

Maxi Gomez

The 21-year-old Maxi Gomez can be a great addition to the forward line. He has the physicality and ruthlessness in front of goal to trouble the defenders. Moreover, he can win long balls and provide knock-downs for attacking players around him.

According to Evening Standard, La Liga club Celta Vigo have rejected West Ham‘s £27m bid for the player and are asking for £35m. Hughes must jump at this opportunity and make an improved bid to snap him up.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek (CM)

The dominant central midfielder is still unsure about his future at Chelsea under new manager Maurizio Sarri. He has previously made it clear that he will leave Stamford Bridge if regular playing time isn’t offered.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek

Southampton need a midfielder like Loftus-Cheek, who is good on the ball and also a commanding presence in central midfield. Hence, Mark Hughes must monitor the situation of the player and get him if Sarri isn’t offering game time.

Jack Butland (GK)

Butland got relegated with Stoke City last season and shouldn’t mind moving back to the Premier League. He is an experienced shot-stopper and was the second choice England goalkeeper at the World Cup.

Southampton have got Angus Gunn and Alex McCarthy, with Fraser Forster fighting for the No.1 spot. However, if Hughes manages to get Butland in, it will secure the most important position of the team. Having worked with the player before at Stoke City, the manager would benefit having him in the team.
