Three centre-backs Rangers should consider signing before the transfer deadline

It has been a busy summer for Steven Gerrard and Rangers. Rangers have already signed Connor Goldson, Borna Barisic, Allan McGregor, Kyle Lafferty, Scott Arfield and Jon Flanagan this summer but the team still doesn’t appear complete, especially after the 3-3 draw against Motherwell.

Rangers’ defensive fragilities were exposed when Motherwell’s Peter Hartley poked in a 94th-minute equaliser for the home side.

Despite spending big on defenders this summer, the Gers need further reinforcements if they are to challenge for the title. As defence remains an area of concern, here are three centre-backs Rangers should consider signing before the transfer window slams shut tomorrow.

Joe Worrall (Nottingham Forest)

After the Motherwell game, Gerrard will clearly not be content with his defence and he desperately needs a commanding centre-back in his ranks. The Gers could do well by securing a deal for Nottingham Forest central defender Joe Worrall.

Joe Worrall

Worrall, who has plenty of Championship experience from the past years with Forest, could help Rangers solidify their backline. If Gerrard is to challenge Celtic for the title, Rangers must complete their defensive puzzle by signing Worrall from the Championship.

Gareth McAuley (Free agent)

Gareth McAuley might be 38 but he is still going strong at the moment and could help Rangers this term. The new Ibrox chief needs flexibility in the backline and an experienced head is much-needed at this moment.

In that case, McAuley could be ideal for Rangers. The former West Brom man is a strong central defender with bags of experience.

Landing a central defender is paramount and Rangers should consider making a move for McAuley, who will also be useful in providing depth to the squad.

Robert Huth (Free agent)

Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic have settled in well at Ibrox but as the season wears on, Gerrard is bound to have to give them a rest. With injuries and suspensions being a part and parcel of the game, the Gers could do with an extra figure in the defence.

Robert Huth

Rangers should definitely try to bring Robert Huth to Ibrox as he could make a massive impact in the Scottish Premier League. Huth is a free agent after being released by Leicester City at the end of last season.

The German has proven his level of consistency over the years and could fancy a new challenge in Scotland. Despite his age, Huth would be an excellent signing for the Light Blues and would provide some much-needed steel at the back.
