3 Players Chelsea Must Recall From Loan This Summer

There’s not a shadow of a doubt that Chelsea have some of the continent’s brightest young prospects in their academy, a fact cemented by their UEFA Youth League triumph recently. The young Blues are also the current holders of the FA Youth Cup and have reached their fourth successive final.

But opportunities have been rare and infrequent thanks to Jose Mourinho’s ‘Experience over Youth’ policy, but given a chance, these bright upcoming stars could take the Premier League by surprise come next season.

Here’s three such young stars the Blues must recall from their loan spells next season.

Patrick Bamford

Diego Costa has had his fair share of injuries in the last couple of years, and Didier Drogba seems to be well past his best and firmly into his twilight years.

Drogba has struggled with his movement and to adjust to the high tempo the likes of Hazard and Oscar like to play with, and this young Chelsea forward, currently on loan at Middlesbrough where he was smashed 19 goals in 34 starts this season, earning the Championship’s Player of the year honor, looks more than ready to graduate to the next level as a second/third choice striker for the Blues.

Bamford has proved in the Championship that he has a knack of finding the net at will, and the young Englishman could be a perfect replacement for the ageing Ivorian.

Marco van Ginkel

A player with tremendous potential, van Ginkel never got the opportunity to prove his mettle at Stamford Bridge having been loaned to AC Milan at the start of the campaign.

While the youngster has struggled with injuries in Italy, he has impressed when given the opportunity. And given his ability on the ball, the young Dutchman would be a decent option in central midfield for Jose Mourinho’s side next term.

A favorite among the fans, van Ginkel’s return could help speed his development as he will get to share a dressing room with the likes of Cesc Fabregas and Nemanja Matic.

Thomas Kalas

Cast your mind back to the game against Liverpool at Anfield when Jose Mourinho sent his troops out with the sole purpose of negating Liverpool’s attacking threat. Thomas Kalas showed excellent maturity and presence of mind in a high pressure game to snuff out a rampaging Liverpool, but Mourinho didn’t trust the young defender as a backup this season.

While his loan spell at FC Koln proved to be a disaster, Middlesbrough would be grateful to the young defender as he produced some fine performances to help the Riverside Stadium based club in their push for promotion.

With Gary Cahill and John Terry looking solid as ever, first team appearances may be hard to come by but Kalas could prove to be a capable backup in the cup games. There’s little doubt the young defender can gain a lot in his progress with some minutes under his belt at Stamford Bridge, it is only a question of whether Mourinho considers him a good enough option to be in the squad.
