Three players Arsenal must sign in the summer – including this highly-rated Chelsea veteran

After the international break, Manchester City are destined to wrap up the Premier League title in the next couple of weeks. However, Champions League places are open for the taking and Arsenal fans will be hoping their club prioritises winning the Europa League this season to enter Europe’s most elite competition next term.

As the next transfer window comes closer, it is often from the red part of London where an outburst of fans is witnessed and that is usually down to Arsene Wenger’s naivety to sign quality players to challenge for the title. Season after season, Arsenal have struggled to cope with the injuries and lack of bench strength which has led to their downfall.

It is clear there is no shortage of attacking players in the club’s ranks following the additions of Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in January. But the club’s problems lie on the other side of the pitch and unless Wenger addresses it, the Gunners will continue to fail to challenge for silverware.

They have a good team at present but it is quite evident Arsenal need a couple of fresh faces at the end of the season to bolster the squad. Hence, going forward, here are three players the Gunners should try signing in summer.

David Luiz

In defence, the popular choice is Chelsea veteran, David Luiz. The Brazilian has been injured for a long time at Chelsea and the Metro had reported that after a tussle with head coach Antonio Conte last year, Luiz has failed to break into the first-team in 2018.

Arsenal’s need for a defender is down to a number of factors. Per Mertesacker will hang up his boots next season, and while the club have the likes of Calum Chambers and Rob Holding, they need an experienced centre-half to replace skipper Laurent Koscielny, whose form has significantly faded this season.

Shkodran Mustafi is a decent defender but is yet to be consistent. So the addition of Luiz from Chelsea makes sense next summer as the Brazilian will add a lot of bite and energy in Arsenal’s defence.

Jan Oblak

The Gunners are in desperate need of a new goalkeeper. After addressing the defence, the goalkeeping position should be a priority for Wenger.

Petr Cech has been a fantastic performer in the Premier League, first for Chelsea and now for Arsenal. But the veteran shot-stopper hasn’t been consistent this season and has rightfully received a lot of flak. While David Ospina is reserved for cup games, Arsenal need a solid and reliable goalkeeper this summer.

Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak has established as one of Europe’s top goalkeepers and Arsenal should seriously consider in making an eye-catching bid for him. However, given the quality he possesses, it is very clear that Oblak won’t come for cheap.

Steven N’Zonzi

N’Zonzi has improved tremendously since moving to Sevilla from the Premier League a couple of years ago. He possesses everything a defensive midfielder would love to have – strength, physicality, height and pace with sound technical abilities.

The Frenchman is not one of those stylish midfielders who spray crosses from the base of the midfield; he loves to keep things simple. N’Zonzi is aggressive, makes good use of his physicality and is a good ball-winner, unlike Arsenal’s current crop of midfielders.

N’Zonzi may not be the quickest or sharpest of midfielders but he would improve Arsenal’s midfield in several areas.
