Three missed targets Manchester United must try and land in January

Manchester United endured an underwhelming summer transfer window which saw the club unable to land a number of their top targets. Jose Mourinho did sign the likes of Fred, Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant in the off-season, but the Portuguese manager was understandably frustrated with the lack of transfer activity.

Fortunately for him, the window opens once again for a month in January. Mourinho could dive back into the market and go after his targets then. There is no certainty as to whether these players will remain the club’s top targets but football is football and anything can happen in the space of four months.

But here, we take a look at three players Jose Mourinho can go back for when the hunting season begins in January.

Willian (Chelsea)

The pacy winger was heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford with rumours suggesting that Anthony Martial could make the switch to the Blues. But a deal failed to materialize and Willian remained a Chelsea player. The Brazilian is a brilliant attacker who has been in exciting form for the Londoners over the last season.

Willian

Willian has definitely been one of the most consistent players for Chelsea he is a fixture-proof player who can play well on any given day. A versatile footballer who can play on either flank or through the centre, Willian will provide United with the cutting edge in the final third.

Toby Alderweireld (Tottenham Hotspur)

The Spurs man was linked with the Red Devils all summer but Tottenham Hotspur successfully held onto the Belgian’s services. The Lilywhites played hardball and Alderweireld remained a Spurs player when the window shut.

Toby Alderweireld

The defender is tall, strong and agile at the back. He was particularly impressive for Belgium at the World Cup and is a key member of Spurs as well. Alderweireld would provide Manchester United with some security at the back. Mourinho is known for his defensive set-ups, making Alderweireld the perfect signing for the manager.

The Belgian is calm and composed on the ball, rarely prone to making mistakes. Manchester United are already a hard team to breach and with the arrival of Alderweireld, doing so might be close to impossible.

Harry Maguire (Leicester City)

The Leicester City man has been making a name for himself across Europe over the last season. Maguire is a transformed centre-back when compared to the one that was relegated with Hull City. He has since gone on to establish himself in Claude Puel’s side, playing every single league game for the Foxes last season.

Harry Maguire

He was also impressive for Gareth Southgate’s England team that ultimately finished fourth in the World Cup. Maguire offers defensive stability and offensive prowess at the same time. He is strong in the air and poses a major threat from set-pieces as well.

Hence, Mourinho should definitely go back for the defender in January. Leicester slapped a £75m price tag on the defender and United didn’t go for it. He is quite committed and showed no signs of fatigue despite playing every single game for the Foxes last season.
