Chelsea have endured a decent season so far but it has not been without several ups and downs. The Blues are currently out of the Champions League qualification spots and are occupying 5th place in the table. They are four points behind fourth-placed Liverpool and with 8 games left to go, Antonio Conte’s men will have to be at their absolute best to ensure they stand a chance to qualify for the elite European competition next season.
Although they have faced issues in a lot of aspects this season, the lack of quality in the midfield area continues to let them down. In fact, besides N’Golo Kante and Cesc Fabregas, not even a single one of Conte’s options are strong enough to hold the fort on their own. That places a lot of stress on Kante since one player is obviously not enough to carry the brunt of a team’s midfield.
With that in mind, here are three midfielders Chelsea could target during the upcoming summer window.
Ever since Nemanja Matic left the club, Chelsea have been devoid of power in the midfield area and a player with Wanyama can certainly boost their performances on the whole. Furthermore, due to Tiemoue Bakayoko’s lack of defensive awareness and poor positioning, a player like Wanyama will certainly prove to be a great signing for the Premier League defending champions.
If Lazio are in 4th place in the Serie A standings this season, it is largely due to Sergej Milinkovic-Savic’s contributions. Having scored 9 goals and provided 3 assists in the Italian top-flight, the former Genk midfielder is an ideal mix of attacking intent and defensive awareness.
A player like him could make significant contributions on both fronts and with Manchester United and Manchester City already harbouring an interest, Chelsea should as well join the party.
Despite being just 23 years of age, Niguez has established himself as one of the most potent and effective midfielders in the La Liga. He is technically gifted and is blessed with a mature understanding of the game, meaning his style is very similar to that of Milinkovic-Savic’s.
Both players are equally adept in contributing to the attack as well as defence and considering the kind of impact Niguez has made for Diego Simeone’s men, there is no doubt that he could replicate that form to put Chelsea ahead of their competitors.
