3 Liverpool Players Who Should Be Sacrificed For Marquee Signings

Share

This summer is going to be a crucial one for Liverpool football club as they have to add quality in their squad to keep up with the additional pressure of European football and the expectations of repeating their success of this season. It goes without saying that they have to go in the market looking for a left-back, a defensive midfielder and a playmaker to increase the depth.

But the club management should also look forward to offloading some deadwood from the club in their pursuit of reducing the wage bill and also gathering some funds that they could use to buy some big names as they get ready to play UCL next season. Manager Brendan Rodgers has not kept players at the club who have failed to respond to his plans and this season the trend will continue. We take a look at three players who could be on their way out of the club at the end of the season.

1. Iago Aspas

Iago Aspas Liverpool

He was brought into the club after his impressive performance for Celta Vigo in La Liga the previous season and a lot was expected of him. But things have not turned out very decently for him. When he has to face competition from the deadliest striking duo in the Premier League of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge just for a place in the side, it is rather cruel on him. To add to the misery, his own game has not elevated to the Premier League level and he has often fell short on the physical aspect of the game. It would be rather harsh to sell him just after one season without even without trying him to the fullest, but that looks like the obvious end to his Liverpool career as of now.

2. Luis Alberto

When the former Barcelona B star joined the club, Rodgers stated that he was much in the likes of Coutinho. The fans were overjoyed and all expected him to have the same impact as the pint sized Brazilian has had on the club after joining in January 2013. But to the disappointment of many, Alberto has not been able to establish himself at the club and although he has shown some glimpse of his brilliance, it has not been enough to guarantee his stay at the club. This looks to go down as a blot on Rodger’s transfer activity and a loan move to a lower ranked Premier League would be the least for Alberto.

3. Pepe Reina

Reina is a Liverpool legend and will always remain so. Joining the club in 2005, he has done his bit for the club and has been a top performer for the club over the years. But age has caught up with the goalkeeper and he is nowhere near his former self nowadays. When Rodgers went ahead with the purchase of Simon Mignolet last season, it was evident that Reina would leave the club sooner than later and Napoli came calling for a loan deal. But as his loan deal is set to expire, it looks like Reina would be sold this time on a permanent move with a few clubs still interested in his services.
