3 Goal Machines West Ham Should Go For In The Summer Window – Including This Liverpool Trickster

Share

West Ham United have mounted an excellent recovery in recent weeks after starting the season on an extremely poor note. The Hammers looked certain to be involved in the relegation scrap until last month, after which they have hit a sudden good patch of form that has seen them rise in the top half of the table, occupying the 9th place.

Despite the sale of Dimitri Payet, Slaven Bilic’s side are looking strong going forward and with the fit-again Andy Carroll firing again, things look bright heading into the end of the season. However, reinforcements over the summer are a must for the East Londoners. Jonathan Calleri’s loan spell will end at the end of the season, Enner Valencia, who is on loan at Everton, has hardly kicked a ball while young Ashley Fletcher too has had issues adapting to the first-team football. That leaves only Carroll as the striking option for Bilic, highlighting the need for bringing in a new attacker in the summer.

Here we look at three strikers that West Ham should look to bring in, in the summer transfer window:

Daniel Sturridge

This one has been going on for quite some time now with the Liverpool forward linked with a move to the Hammers every other day but nothing happened on this front in the recently closed winter transfer window.

However, that could change come summer. Sturridge continues to struggle at Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp and has found it extremely difficult to get going. The goals aren’t coming as regularly, the player looks short on confidence and it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Englishman decides to leave Anfield in the summer.

Despite his ongoing struggles, Sturridge is a quality operator and will bring much value to the West Ham attack. Playing through the middle, with the likes of Robert Snodgrass and Michail Antonio on the flanks could aid his return to his best. A shot of confidence in the arm by the manager and a regular run of games could do wonders for the former Chelsea man and West Ham could reap the benefits of his immense abilities.

Nikola Kalinic

The Fiorentina forward is another player who was targeted by the Hammers according to previous reports. However, as per the latest rumours, Kalinic is set to reject West Ham and move to the lucrative Chinese Super League.

The 29-year old has been in good form for Fiorentina this season and has scored 14 times already along with four assists. Having worked with the striker during his days as the Croatia national team manager, Bilic was keen on a summer move for Kalinic in the pastt. The Croat has played in England before, having been part of the Blackburn Rovers team from 2009 to 2011.

Strong, experienced and possessing an eye for goal, Kalinic will bring a lot to the West Ham squad. Add to that the benefit of having worked with the manager before and his experience in England make a strong case for the Hammers to make a move for the 29-year old.

Gregoire Defrel

Another striker who was widely rumoured to be heading to the London Stadium in the January window was the 25-year old Sassuolo attacker Gregoire Defrel. The Frenchman has grown leaps and bounds since he joined Sassuolo from AS Cesena back in the summer of 2015.

Defrel has gone on to score 10 times for the Italian side this season and has also chalked up five assists against his name. A striker primarily by trade, the Frenchman is comfortable out on the wings as well. Not the biggest presence on the field, Defrel more than makes up for it with his street-smart intelligence and desire. A hard-worker for the team, he isn’t shy from performing his defensive duties either.

He may not be the biggest names around, he may not be a world-beater yet, but Defrel has the ability and the talent to help West Ham. With Andy Carroll, being the operating target man, the 25-year old striker will provide an alternate approach and dimension to the Hammers.
