Rafael Benitez is reportedly talking to Chelsea about bringing striker Tammy Abraham to Newcastle United this summer.
The Spanish coach managed to get a good look at Abraham last season as they were in the same division, the striker spending the season on loan at Bristol City where he proved incredibly popular. The 19-year-old played 41 times in the league for City, scoring 23 times which for a side that largely struggled was a great effort.
Abraham also managed 3 assists for his side and was an all-round menace to Championship defences all year, and the comparisons between him and current Newcastle no.9 Dwight Gayle are obvious. Despite the club’s increased budget and Rafa’s obvious ambition, Newcastle are not in a position to buy a modern day Alan Shearer.
These days, recognised top class strikers can cost anywhere between £30m-£100m and these figures are just insurmountable right now. That being the case, the Toon must think outside the box and Abraham could be the perfect signing. Not only would he not cost the earth, but he would solve another problem too.
Dwight Gayle has had an excellent year at Newcastle, but has divided opinion as to whether he has sufficient quality to lead the line at the top level. The same questions can be put to Abraham, but at least with both in the squad Newcastle will get the chance to compare them directly and pick the best player.
Training together will also ensure that they naturally push each other to improve, something that can only benefit both players as well as the club. It remains to be seen how far either player would go in the game, but one thing is for sure; they both have a very bright future at the top level and can do a lot worse than ply their trade at St James’ Park.
Abraham’s age means that, virtually whatever fee they paid for him, Newcastle will have got a bargain and will either have a long-term solution up front or at the very least, a player who will bring in a huge profit in a couple of season’s time. However, a loan deal is what that is being discussed at the moment and they have the leverage of waiting to see if the investment would be worth it.
Newcastle have a good history with strikers, so does Rafa Benitez as a coach, and the fans at St James’ Park always take well to a quality goal scorer, meaning Abraham would become a crowd favourite virtually overnight in the North East.
