West Ham Should Simply Pounce On Brighton’s Lewis Dunk And Here’s Why

West Ham appointed David Moyes as the new manager after sacking Slaven Bilic following a string of disappointing displays this season. Moyes’ impact at his new club remains to be seen but he will face a big test of his intent in January. It is his first managerial job since resigning from Sunderland but the former Manchester United manager will have to be shrewd to bring in new recruits during the winter.

Lucky for him, he got appointed well in advance, which should provide him some time to assess the situation before identifying targets. After about a week in charge, Moyes has reportedly placed a target sign upon Brighton defender Lewis Dunk. The Hammers have been wasteful in front of the net so far, and if they are to do better, they need to address their defensive woes, making Dunk seem like a viable solution to establish solidity at the back.

Brighton have been quite impressive this term, and the 25-year-old has been crucial in adding to their defensive strength. Despite playing in Brighton’s debut Premier League season, the £4.5m rated Dunk is understood to be on Gareth Southgate’s radar for the England squad.

The Seagulls have definitely exceeded expectations and are currently gracing the 8th spot in the points table. In fact, a true testament to their defensive solidity is the fact that they have conceded just 11 goals in the same number of games this season and Dunk has been a crucial aspect in their tight back line.

Meanwhile, West Ham are languishing in the bottom 3, having conceded a whopping 23 goals already. This does bring up the need for a player like Dunk but Brighton will be hesitant to lose their prolific academy graduate.

The 24-year-old has been a part of Brighton since he his childhood and rapidly progressed through the ranks at the club. He featured for them in the League One and is still going strong for them in the English top-flight. Dunk is over 6ft tall, making it easy for him to establish his presence aerially as well as on the ground.

He has made more than 200 appearances for Brighton as of now, but if the Hammers do make a move, Dunk could be tempted to consider the offer. West Ham need a young centre-back who can compete with veterans like Jose Fonte and James Collins, and Dunk seems to be the right choice at this point.
