Nottingham Forest Opinion: Adlene Guedioura’s proposed move to Kuwait makes perfect sense for all parties involved

According to claims from French news outlet Le Buteur, as cited by Nottingham Post, Nottingham Forest midfielder Adlene Guedioura has attracted interest from Kuwaiti club Al Kuwait, with reports claiming that talks between the 33-year-old and the Middle Eastern side have already reached an advanced stage. 

Guedioura is currently on international duty with Algeria in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt where he will have a chance to taste silverware when Algeria lock horns with Senegal in the finals this week. 

However, the latest piece of news means that Guedioura, who has just 12 months remaining on his current contract with Nottingham Forest, might not return to the City Ground after the end of the AFCON.

The 33-year-old contributed with 2 goals and 2 assists in 27 appearances for Forest in the Championship the last term but the fans might have seen the last of him. 

Guedioura made his move to English football with Wolves from Belgian side Charleroi initially on a loan deal back in the January 2010 before making his stay at Molineux permanent at the end of the 2009-10 season. 

The Algerian midfield enforcer established himself as a regular starter for Wolves and made 39 appearances in all competitions over the course of two-and-a-half seasons, which included a six-month spell on the sidelines due to a broken tibia.

Guedioura joined Nottingham Forest on loan in January 2012 before making his stay permanent at the City Ground in the following summer. 

Guedioura scored a few spectacular goals in the 2012-13 season and established himself as a firm favourite amongst the City Ground faithful before completing a deadline day move to Premier League side Crystal Palace in the summer of 2013.

The Algerian subsequently went on to feature for the likes of Watford and Middlesbrough but he once again returned to the City Ground for his second spell in January 2018, reuniting with former Boro manager Aitor Karanka.

The 33-year-old has racked up a total of 100 appearances in all competitions over the course of his multiple spells at the City Ground but the time may have come for the fans to wave goodbye to one of their most beloved players.

As a matter of fact, Nottingham Forest should not make an attempt to stand in the way of Guedioura’s potential move to Kuwait, given that he is very much in the twilight of his career at 33. 

Plus, he is in the last year of his contract, meaning that this summer is the last opportunity for Forest to move him on and claim some sort of a transfer fee, which in turn, would help fund reinvestment in order to improve other areas of the squad. 

Furthermore, Forest have brought in players like Alfa Semedo and Tiago Silva from Portugal this summer.

Meanwhile, Ryan Yates, Ben Watson and Claudio Yacob are all in the ranks, meaning that Guedioura is likely to slip down the pecking order under new manager Sabri Lamouchi next season.
