According to a report by The Sun, Southampton are interested in a summer swoop for Norwich City sensation James Maddison. The report states that the Saints have tabled a bid in the region of £20m and that a potential deal is on the horizon as the bid has been accepted.
The 21-year-old midfielder lit up the Championship last season with his swashbuckling performances for the Canaries and it comes as no surprise that he is attracting interest from the Premier League.
Norwich failed to mount a solid promotion push last season but it goes without saying that Maddison was arguably one of the best players in the Championship. And now, his next destination could be Southampton.
Saints boss Mark Hughes will be looking to make numerous changes ahead of the new season after the club narrowly escaped relegation last term.
The road will not be easy going forward but with a player such as Maddison in the mix, Southampton will have a strong chance of avoiding their mistakes from the previous campaign. Throughout the 2017/18 campaign, the club suffered from lack of creativity.
Southampton’s midfield department was quite poor and their attackers suffered majorly up front due to lack of service. However, Maddison would go a long way in helping them solve their woes.
As per Squawka, the youngster created a whopping 120 chances in 42 Championship appearances last season. In addition to that, Maddison also scored 14 goals and provided 7 assists.
Although he is predominantly an attacking midfielder, the young Englishman can also play as a central midfielder and out on the right-wing. His versatility would also come in handy for Hughes, thus making him a pivotal transfer target for Southampton this summer.
Playing in the Premier League will surely be a major step-up for Maddison as it will provide him with a fresh set of challenges. More often than not, some players can work wonders in the Championship before failing to live up to their billing in the Premier League.
However, at Southampton, Maddison will be one of their most crucial players and it remains to be seen if he is feisty enough to establish himself in the top-flight as well. Nevertheless, signing him will be a brilliant move for the Saints and they must fight tooth-and-nail to acquire his services.
