12 goals in 51 PL games – Liverpool would be better off cashing in on £10m attacker in January

Why Liverpool should definitely cash in on Divock Origi in January

According to Turkish-football, out of favour Liverpool striker Divock Origi has been attracting interest from Istanbul outfit Galatasaray. Manager Fatih Terim is facing a crisis up front and needs a new striker.

Origi did not leave Liverpool in the summer and stayed put. But a move now would be feasible for both the club and the player. Liverpool haven’t named the Belgian in their Champions League squad this season, which means Origi can play a part if the Turkish outfit make it to the next round.

Liverpool should choose to cash in on the striker as his performances have been below par in the recent seasons.

Origi made the move from Lille in 2015 for £10m and initially impressed by chipping in with a couple of goals but his form soon deteriorated at a rapid rate, after which the 23-year-old was shipped off on loan.

Divock Origi

He endured a mediocre loan spell at Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg last season, scoring just 6 goals in 31 appearances. Origi is now a fringe member in this Liverpool squad given that Klopp went on to sign Dominic Solanke from Chelsea last year as well.

Roberto Firmino and Daniel Sturridge have so far shared the striker’s role this season, with the latter impressing after returning from a long lay-off last season. It’s clear that Origi doesn’t have a part left to play in this squad.

The Belgian doesn’t seem to suit Klopp’s high-intensity gegenpressing system. While Firmino is an all-round striker, Origi lacks certain traits to replace the Brazilian. The former Lille striker has only mustered a total of 12 goals in 51 Premier League appearances for the Reds. (Stats courtesy – Premier League)

He has shown glimpses of his quality at times but the Origi has failed to maintain any sort of consistency in his displays.

Offloading the striker would not only provide him with a chance to play regular football but would also help Liverpool recoup some of the funds they spent in the summer.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are in dire need of a new creative midfielder in January and the sale of Origi would give them the funds to spend elsewhere. Liverpool should definitely offload Origi if Galatasaray come calling in the January transfer window.
