France fought a hard-earned victory against a resilient Peru to book their place into the knockout stages of the World Cup. Peru proved to be a tough nut to crack for the World Cup favourites France as the South American side thoroughly dominated the second but failed to convert their chances.
Kylian Mbappe’s first-half goal was enough for Les Blues as they edged past Peru in their second group game of the tournament. The French wonder kid became the youngest goalscorer for his country at the biggest stage in international football. The game was tightly fought and let’s take a look at how the players fared in the game.
The goalkeeper made a good save to deny Peru from scoring in the first half but there wasn’t much more he needed to deal with. Peru couldn’t manage to trouble the shot-stopper much, despite making good attacking moves.
Pavard failed to make an impact going forward. With that being said, the youngster was good in defensive situations for his team.
Varane had a solid game and dealt with almost everything that the Peru attackers threw at him. Was a force in the air and missed an opportunity to score by a whisker.
Much like his partner, Umtiti had a good game as he formed a good central defence partnership with Varane. Did what was asked of him.
The Real Madrid wingback had a good game going forward and also while coming back to defend. Was involved in a good battle with Carrillo.
A picture of perpetual motion, Kante intercepted passes all over the pitch to help his team gain possession. Was at his usual best.
Made 2 great passes in the first half, one of which resulted in the goal. However, the flamboyant midfielder was casual with his passing and failed to win the midfield battle as Peru kept most of the possession.
Got the all-important goal for this team. Threatened Peru with his blistering pace on a couple of occasions and showed his usual tricks and flicks.
The French superstar was unusually quiet today. Linked up well with Giroud in a few situations but failed to provide the quality which he is known for.
The central midfielder looked lost on the left-wing. Struggled all game to make an impact.
The target man did his job. Did many useful lay-offs to teammates which resulted in good attacking situations. Could have had a goal had Mbappe not knocked the ball in which was already going in.
Came on for Mbappe in the 75th minute.
Replaced Griezmann after 80 minutes.
Made a cameo by replacing Pogba in the 89th minute.
