Wolves opinion: Nuno Santo should sign Gedson Fernandes

According to Italian outlet Calciomercato, Wolves are lining up a bid to sign Benfica’s Gedson Fernandes in the summer as they are prepared to let their star midfielder Ruben Neves leave.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are willing to table a bid of €35million for the midfielder in an attempt to lure him to the Premier League this summer.

Wolves have had a spectacular return to the Premier League as they sit 7th in the league and are the favourites to get into the Europa League qualifiers next season.

Nuno Espirito Santo has worked his magic for Wolves and has had a gem at his disposal in another Benfica player, Raul Jimenez.

The Mexican, who is on loan from the Portuguese club, has led the line fantastically well and Wolves will be hoping that Benfica will let him stay beyond the summer. However, a priority for them would be a replacement for Ruben Neves if he decides to leave in the summer.

The 22-year-old has been linked (h/t Express) with a move to Manchester United and his potential departure could really hurt Wolves next season.

A replacement for the Portuguese is an absolute necessity if he does leave and fellow Portuguese midfielder Gedson Fernandes would be a phenomenal signing.

Gedson started off the season as a regular and has featured 39 times for the Portuguese champions in six different competitions. The 20-year-old has 5 assists from central midfield so far this season and has been really impressive with his all-round game.

The youngster has featured everywhere in central midfield and he can also play on the right wing. Gedson provides incredible balance to his side and possesses exceptional technique on the ball.

Like Ruben Neves, Gedson has an incredible right foot. The 20-year-old has the outstanding ability to score absolute scorchers from outside the box. His shots are often unstoppable and he is an extremely dangerous player when afforded space around the box.

Gedson is also an astute passer and is capable of finding runners when he plays in a deeper position. His ability to play as a number 10 could prove to be extremely important.

Conclusion

If Wolves lose Ruben Neves this summer, they will not find a more similar player in his position than Gedson Fernandes. The 20-year-old possesses massive potential and with experience in Europe already, he could be a massive asset if Wolves make it to the Europa League next season.

His versatility is a bonus, especially with Joao Moutinho’s age, and he would be a wonderful signing by Nuno Espirito Santo in the summer.
